The Sunken Forest on Fire Island is a great place to cool off on a hot summer day. The wooden walkways meander through the virgin forest allowing sightings of deer, fox, racoons and many many birds and butterflies.

The park is part of the Fire Island Seashore. Closer to New York City and also serving Long Islanders it tends to be crowded and is accessible by car, bus and Long Island Railroad. There is a large public pool as well as the Atlantic Ocean. There are food concessions and an outdoor theater for concerts and plays. B hers who might wish a calmer atmosphere need to go further south to the 2 communities on Fire Island and to the wealthy beach scene of the Hamptons.

Kismet Beach on Fire Island is one of my favorite spots. The beach is oceanfront with white sand. It’s a short walk from the bayside. You have a view of the Kismet lighthouse on the ocean.

Like many, we have visited Davis/Leja for our entire lives. Ample slips for a variety of boats, some include electricity and water as needed. Day rates, extended stays and seasonal docking are available. Clearly marked channel but be advised to stay between the markers because the water does become shallow outside of the channel. We day trip during summer and fall to visit friends, family or dine at the Casino Restaurant on a 23' Center Console. On nice summer day trips we try to arrive early because slips can fill up quickly. While the Marina is protected from the elements the transient slips on the North Side by the Tower can get get so rough that boarding via the bow can be a challenge and pickups broadside directly in front of the Tower are not an option. This usually occurs with winds of 15 plus knots from a Northerly direction. If you are a boater but unfamiliar with the Patchogue/Great South Bay note that during the summer the wind often picks up from the SW during the afternoon and expect a consistent 10 knots until sunset. With the completion of the nearby Watch Hill Marina some of the traffic has abated at Davis but this is still a primary destination for many. The Davis Park Marina Staff has always been helpful and accommodating. Need help with a line, docking, unloading or departing? Someone is always ready to assist. Dropping off people or possessions for a week at a beach house? Never a problem. Let them know and you can tie up, unload and leave without a problem. My cousin and family keeps a houseboat in the Marina for the entire season and love it. Definitely check their website for updated rates, rules and reservations.

A 30 minute wonderful ferry ride away to a real summer community. After a nice ferry ride you arrive at the bustling commercial district of Ocean Beach with restaurants and stores. No cars! A short walk from downtown and you are in the residential neighborhood heading to the Ocean. Relaxing but it is also an exciting new experience to be enjoyed.
