Academia Uruguay

Academia Uruguay is a Spanish Language school located in the historic center of Montevideo, 'Ciudad Vieja'. We offer individual and group courses on all levels, from beginners to very advanced.

Opting for three weeks of Spanish study at Academia Uruguay in February was one of the best decisions I made for my 6 weeks of travel in South America, and it kicked my year off to a great start. I was so happy with my experience at the Academia – a perfect blend of learning and yet still a relaxed pace (as long as you’re willing to speak Spanish in class for 4 hours a day!). The school is conveniently located in Ciudad Vieja, super easy to get to, and in a great area with plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby as well as a pedestrian zone a couple of blocks away (my AirBnB in Palermo had a bike available, so I even biked along the Rambla to school a few times, but also a nice 25-30 minute walk or quick bus ride). The classes at Academia Uruguay were fantastic and exactly what I was looking for on a bit of a studycation. :) My goal going into classes was to really work on my conversational skills and brush up a bit on grammar, and that was exactly what I got! A heavy emphasis on conversation while simultaneously digging into grammar as needed to tailor to the needs of the students in our small class (there were only four students at the beginning, and three of us after the first week). The small class sizes allowed for more personalized instruction, and our teacher Lucia was my absolute favorite! Warm, friendly, relatable, and super knowledgeable and quick to adapt to our specific questions and needs when it came to grammar. I heard similar positive comments about other friends’ instructors in different classes as well, and also had a great experience when we switched instructors for a few sessions during the shortened Carnaval class week (a strategy the Academia employed to help break up 6-hour class days during the shortened 4-day instruction week). Another favorite part of my time at the Academia was the mix of students there. With students from all over the globe and a pretty wide variety of ages, it was super easy to find people who wanted to stick with speaking Spanish all day, including during the breaks and once the 4 hours of intensive classes had ended. As I was there during Carnaval, it was also a ton of fun to find fellow travelers at the school to go experience Carnaval events and other sights together. The school also organized two excursions a week that offered a nice variety of activities and locations. Our guide, Fernanda, was wonderful to talk with and adapted beautifully to all the differing levels of Spanish among the students who would join. The staff and instructors were also very helpful in spreading the word about various recommended events so that we could make the most of the Carnaval experience during the month. I highly recommend Academia Uruguay for Spanish study. Classes were both challenging and fun, and an excellent opportunity especially if you want to really improve your speaking and listening skills.

Joventango

Reviewed By dansk248 - Quebec City, Canada

Montevideo is the second city of which tango is part of popular culture, and according to some scholars may be the place where tango was born before expanding and developing in Buenos Aires. Joventango is an opportunity to experience the passion for tango in this city, in a typical place surrounded by grills where you can taste a good piece of roast and a good Tannat wine (characteristic of the country).
