Tsarevets

Dating to the 12th century, this strategic fortress is one of two highly fortified hills (Trapezitza being the other) that protected Bulgarian rulers living on the site in the tsar’s palace.

Tsarevets is a medieval stronghold located on a hill with the same name in Veliko Tarnovo. If you are going there on the summer..bring a hat its quite hot when its sunny. The Sound and Light audiovisual show is an attraction carried out in the evening that uses three lasers, variegated lights, dramatic music and church bells to tell the story of the fall of Tarnovo to the Ottomans, as well as other key moments of the history of Bulgaria. It was free on every Saturday of the week and it was a great experience.

Trapezitsa Fortress

Reviewed By lucianm2013 - Constanta, Romania

Trapezitsa Fortress is a large archaeological site located on one of the surrounding hills which dominates the town of Veliko Tarnovo. You may reach the place using your own car, public transportation (bus 50 or 110) or just walking till the Asenov quarter where the entrance to the fortress is located. Once you are there, going up to the hill could be done using the funicular or walking – the path starts near to the parking area. Our option was for funicular (it operates daily, except Mondays, 9am to 5pm, from May to October). The way up lasts for few minutes while you may enjoy the spectacular views. Trapezitsa Fortress was an important stronghold as well as a religious place in the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Having in mind the importance of the place, significant restoration works were developed during the last years. Nowadays on the hill you may see the remains of 19 churches, the Northern Gate, defensive towers and military purpose buildings. There are alleys which make the access easy and benches if you need a little bit of rest, or just want to admire the landscape. Very close to the upper funicular station, on the main alley, there is a new built museum where you can find more information about the history of the place and admire some exhibits found in the area.
