6 Hiking Trails in Rotorua That You Shouldn't Miss

January 23, 2022 Weston Hennigan

Bubbling mineral springs and pools promise maximum relaxation in Rotorua, on New Zealand's North Island. Therapeutic hot mud pools, dramatic geysers and a buried village are within easy reach of the city. What happens in the bubbling mud geysers of "Rotovegas"—the area at the top of Fenton Street—stays in Rotovegas. Once you've made the most of the mud, soar nearly 2,000 feet on the Skyline Gondola for views of Lake Rotorua, then zip back down to explore the lake by paddle steamer, fishing charter or WWII amphibious vehicle.

We stopped here for a picnic and ended up staying longer then we expected because it was so peaceful. The hike is very easy going from one beach to another. Both beaches are wonderful to swim at and have a picnic. The lake is a short drive from Rorotura. Go.

This is a great walk for all walking levels, the bush is picturesque, the lake was calm and glassy, the birdlife was plentiful, they sung all the way round. Beautiful part of the country.

This is a must do and I wonder why we didn't do it sooner. A great little boat ride followed by a short dip in hot pools and a varied walk and a swim - excellent day out. God to do in either direction.

We were visiting a friend in Rotorua and she took us out to Lake Tikitapu and suggested we do the walk around the lake. The walk took us a bit less than an hour and goes around Lake Tikitapu through wonderful native forest. There are quite a number of information boards along the way giving you information about the area. Lots of the trees have also have id panels which is great.
