Learn about the Texas prison system including an exhibit of the electric chair dubbed "Old Sparky".
Earlier this week I visited the Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville, and had the opportunity to meet with the outgoing and incoming Directors of this marvelous museum and to see what expansion has taken place since I last visited. The added space has provided an opportunity to showcase additional exhibits. Persons interested in criminal justice and penal history, particularly as it relates to the Lone Star State, would enjoy visiting the Texas Prison Museum.

A popular park great for fishing, boating and horseback riding.
This was a pretty park with well-maintained hiking trails. The trails were well marked and easy to follow.

We arrive on Sunday and were just about to leave the main museum entrance when we spotted several buildings to the east of the main entrance. We did not realize that there was an entire outdoor complex with several buildings, houses, Huston's Lawn Office and other items of interest.

Well they say everything's bigger in Texas, and this statue sure lives up to that. The Sam Houston statue is iconical on the freeway that's for sure. What you need to do is take the Side Road and go to the visitor center, and chat with the ladies in the visitor center, and in the gift store, and get yourself over there to the base of that statue and get a real handle on how big it is. Big it is, no it's huge, it's ginormous. What fun and what history lie behind Sam Houston. I can't think of many people who have been senators in two states, a governor, and just downright help make Texas what it is. It's a real eye-opener and there's more history there than I can remember oh, so I guess I'm going to have to go again so that I can keep getting my Texas history straight. Definitely a worthwhile stop, and additionally a good place for a picnic, if you happen to have one in the back of your car, if not take one and enjoy it here under the shadow of Sam Houston

This is a well shaded cemetery with a walking tour that shows different areas and outlines who is buried here. Of course Sam Houston's grave was here as well as many of his acquaintances. It is away from busy traffic areas, so I found it quiet and easy to meditate on the history and era of Sam Houston. It was worth the drive to see it.
