6 Bridges in Oklahoma That You Shouldn't Miss

March 5, 2022 Russell Mellin

With hundreds of man-made lakes, state parks, casinos, museums and nightlife and dining opportunities in revitalized downtown areas in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, there is a lot to see and do in the Sooner State. The state is dotted with phenomenal lakes where swimming, boating and bass fishing are the most desired activities. Some of the state’s most popular lakes include Broken Bow Lake located near the Quachita Mountains; Grand Lake in the northeastern corner of the state at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains and Lake Murray in the hills in the southern part of the state. While the state is known for its many outdoor activities like great fishing, golf, hiking, canoeing and boating, make sure you don’t overlook its fantastic museums. Heading the list are Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, featuring the world’s largest collection of art and artifacts from the American West; the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, which tells the story of the American Cowboy; and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, which has a permanent collection of American and European art. A venerable family favorite activity is Frontier City Amusement Park in Oklahoma City, which has dozens of rides and shows.

On a girls weekend we flew into Tulsa and stopped by on our way to Pawhuska for some great photos and a history lesson on the famous Route 66. We had a lot of fun snapping photos and admiring the details in this beautiful statue.

38 trusses, just shy of 4,000 ft long, this bridge is the longest on Rt. 66. It’s posted 65 mph which makes it the ONLY bridge so posted also. But don’t go that fast! It’s worth savoring at a cruisin’ speed of 45 or less. My husband took a 70 second video as we drove across. Very cool bridge!

Rock Creek Bridge

My husband and I love stopping at any cool roadside sights and I always check TripAdvisor to find out if there is anything around to explore when we travel. We were driving his mom from Tulsa to Oklahoma City and simply couldn't resist taking Route 66. Our sweet senior was baffled as to why we were not on the highway with the fancy turnpike that would be so much faster and it took her a minute to get used to the idea of taking the scenic route! When we stopped to look at this old bridge she was a little impatient, it is after all, just a bridge. But then she noticed that it is paved with old red brick and she started to really look around and appreciate the lovely scenery too. We took several pictures of the bridge itself, the creek below and what looked like an old marker that could have held a plaque with a description that is gone now. As we were driving back toward the main road she actually spotted an old but still standing outdoor drive-in movie screen. As we looked closely through the overgrown bushes and weeds, we could also see the old ticket booth. It isn't hard to imagine this as a bustling drive-in theater that we remember from the not too distant past! We also took photos of some cool military artillery that was parked behind the local VFW very close by. Take some time to slow down, enjoy and explore. You may be pleasantly surprised!

Wow they did a great job with this!! We chose to walk the attached park & see the bridge at night & we are so glad we did. It is beautiful. Bring a lock if you want to attach it to the bridge like others have done.

The Swinging Bridge

The best thing about this attraction is the location: it's just down the road from the Mercantile. We visited on a Saturday around noon, and there were only a few other people around. That is good, because I wouldn't want a lot of people on the bridge with me (it looked very sturdy, but I am a bit of a chicken). It doesn't take much time, the river is pretty and it was safe, even if I'm chicken. There is not a lot of parking space though.
