Karanambu Lodge (Ranch)

A thatched and clay brick settlement on the banks of the Rupununi River, Karanambu prides itself on its pioneer spirit and old world charm and hospitality. Guests are welcomed as friends, share meals around a single ranch style table: and step into a landscape and culture relatively unchanged for generations. To a former generation it was known as the home of Tiny (Edward) McTurk; an amateur naturalist and local folk legend, it was Tiny who introduced the English speaking world to the creatures of South America. Today Karanambu is best known for the work of his daughter Ms. Diane McTurk 'The Otter Lady', whose contributions to Eco-Tourism, Conservation and especially the rescue and reintroduction of Giant Otters has made her Guyana's most famous icon. Within its 110 square mile area Karanambu boasts 5 habitats, 6 species of monkeys, over 600 species of birds, world class fishing and a vast array of flora and fauna. For almost 100 years the McTurk Family and wildlife of Karanambu have attracted visitors from across the globe and has been features in publications by: David Attenborough, Gerald Durrell, Jeff Corwin, Davis Finch, Steven Hilty and John Gimlette. With its rustic yet civilised style Karanambu has been featured on the BBC, German Television, National Geographic, Calgary's 'Zoo Quest' and the Discovery Channel and was in 2013 the recipient of the Caribbean Excellence in Sustainable Tourism Award. Pioneers in the tourism industry in Guyana, Karanambu is today considered the hallmark of Bush Tourism and Eco-Tourism in Guyana.

A beautiful and historic property on the Rupununi River

The spacious guest lodges are private and very comfortable. The main lodge where the meals are served is very welcoming with hammocks and chairs to relax. The compound is large and can accommodate a big group even though there was only one other guest there during our stay. The evening boat trip to see the Victoria amazonica Lilies was a great experience. Our terrific guide Kenneth was generous in sharing his knowledge and an excellent birder . We really enjoyed our time with him. I feel that the lodge really went above and beyond to make our stay a memorable one. This stay was part of a tour package so can't speak for the cost/value of this particular lodge. Karanambu is synonymous with the Giant Otters and much has been written about. Despite knowing that wildlife sightings are not a given, it was still disappointing to not see Otters there or see Cabybaras as we felt this was one place we would . However we did have good Anteater sighting so was very happy about that.

I went to see Waikin Ranch with friends and thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon visit - picking delicious fruits from the trees, horseback riding and the beautiful scenery of the mountain ranges. I plan to return and enjoy more of the delectable Guyanese food and swim in the natural pool!

Wichabai Ranch and Guest Houses

Wichabai is a small family owned cattle ranch, deep in the South Rupununi savannahs. We have 2 twin bedrooms, and TWO BEAUTIFUL NEW GUEST CABINS to open in September 2019. There is fantastic birding all around, including Red Siskins just a short walk away. Take sunset horserides, evening swims in the lake, visits to local villages, learn how to hunt and track wild animals, and eat delicious food straight from the garden.

A welcoming oasis in the south Rupununi !

Reviewed By 5pauliner

Stayed 2 nights here in March 2022 at the tail end of a two week trip to beautiful Guyana . Wichabai is an oasis for travellers in the South Rupununi .... once you leave the border town of Lethem in the rear view and as you skirt the southern flanks of the mysterious Kanuku Mtns , the vista opens up as the road leads you through the wide open of Guyana's expansive savannah to Wichabai ranch. An experience not to be missed.. Great hosts, great guides, great accommodation, great food , ( the most delicious rum cocktails ) great landscapes, and great wildlife. By venturing to Wichabai you are not only treating yourself to a relaxing retreat.... but you are also supporting the important wildlife conservation projects they have going on. I love how Wichabai is a collaboration with the indigenous people of the area , working together to create a sustainable future for people , plants and wildlife. The deluxe lodges are set well apart from the main house which gives everyone privacy and quiet...... This would be a. great venue for a group work retreat or a family destination. There's nothing to not love about this place !

Dadanawa Ranch

Wonderful experience special place

Reviewed By Happytrav66

We had a wonderful time on the ranch for 3 days and nights and were looked after so well by the family, Justin, Erin and we enjoyed the wee boy. There were 6 of us and we felt as if we went back in time, enjoying the ranch and the surrounding area, eating delicious food all together at the large table. The ranch buildings are showing their age a bit which made it more fun for us as the beds were very comfortable and the only sounds were the birds and the cattle. Justin picked us up from the airport at Lethem and we drove in his large van down to the ranch. During our stay we did several things including going to the local village where Vera showed us how to prepare Cassava, the local staple, and make it into farine which is eaten with everything. We watched the vaqueros riding bareback preparing for the rodeo and sorting the cattle. We went swimming in a river, so beautiful with nobody there except us. We saw lots of birds including red ciskins which are coming back from virtual extinction and climbed a small mountain and watched a sunset. Erin is a geologist and explained that the local rock is very old, about 3 Billion years old. An amazing place and so unspoiled. Hard to believe that in the rainy season much of this land is under water. We loved our time at Dadanawa Ranch and thank you Justin and Erin for your immense generosity

Manari Ranch

Incredibly great staff, excellent food, rooms still being updated

Reviewed By Cynthia B

The staff was EXCELLENT, my bed was wonderful (I think i was in one of the rooms that were being updated -- other people said their's were hard). Food was EXCELLENT and plentiful (best food of the tour). only 'cold' water showers but that is pretty standard in outback guyana. bottled water available - hostess was ecologically conscious. Great animals - 3 pigs, a cat, a dog (plus some strays). bird life was excellent - lots of fruit trees. really enjoyed the stay.
