Ellis Lakeside Campground

Those of you who have driven across Kansas know that a nice, quiet shady place to park your RV without driving miles off the highway is hard to find. That's what makes this location so great. Well that and the $20 a night fee. Less than one mile off I-70 in Ellis, Kansas this small city park provides an economical, shaded, relaxing spot for overnighting. According to the city, although there are a limited number of sites, they are seldom full. We stopped mid-week, August 28, and only 12 or so sites were in use. All sites are pull-through and are arranged back to back sharing a single electrical pedestal with 30 amp service for two and water spigot, so you may be facing your neighbor. There only is one picnic table for every 2 sites, so you may not have access to one if your neighbor's arrived first and claimed it. All sites are within a few steps to the small "river" that is dammed up making a "lake". We took our lawn chairs over to the water's edge and relaxed with a beverage until dusk when the mosquitoes became active. There are two concrete block structures with toilets and showers. Although basic, they are very clean. The showers have strong pressure and a decent spray coverage and plenty of room to move around and protect those items you don't want wet. In the women's facility all the showers and one toilet were separated from the sink area by shower curtains, so privacy might be lacking for some. You can walk three blocks to the main street of Ellis, however only one eating establishment is open for dinner and it is not open 7 days a week. There is a dump station on the south side of the shower houses if you need to empty your holding tanks. This is going on my list of places to stop in the future!
