5 Things to Do in Eisenerz That You Shouldn't Miss

November 22, 2017 Natalie Tallman

Eisenerz ("Iron ore") is a market place and old mining town in the Austrian state of Styria, 68 mi (109 km). N.W. of Graz by rail. Pop. (2001) 6,400. It is situated in the deep Erzbach Valley, dominated on the east by the Pfaffenstein 1871m, (6140 ft), on the west by the Kaiserschild 2084m (6830 ft), and on the south by the Erzberg 1465m (5030 ft). It has an interesting example of a medieval fortified church, a Gothic edifice founded by Rudolph of Habsburg in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th.

There aren't many places where you can visit such an impressive mine, let alone witness a blasting live. Quite interesting and unusual. After that you can take a train ride inside an abandonned mine and see some expositions there. All well done and entertaining. Highly recommended, but bear in mind the tour's in German only (or at least our was). Price for the full tour is about 35 Euro for an adult.
After visiting the mine make sure to take the time to see the town of Eisenerz as well.

This is the largest open pit mine in Western Europe. The drive to get there is beautiful. If you have ever dreamed of what California/Oregon looked like before major settlements took hold, visit this part of the country. The air is crisp and clean. When you first see the mine, you will note that it looks like an Aztec Pyramid. I bought a postcard in the main office that had an ariel view of the site. Be sure to ride the Hauly tour. I believe it may be the only way to see the mine. Be aware that school is still in session in June - even late June - and this is a popular end of the year tour event. Local school children will be taking their field trips there. You will need to wear a yellow rain slicker, hard hat, and I recommend sunglasses. Our tour was a late morning tour and we did need our jackets in June! The Hauly stops to allow for pictures and views. If you do not speak or understand much German, download a podcast or read up on this place ahead of time. The tour is in German. There is a pamphlet in English, but you miss a lot of the anecdotes and extras that the tour guide offers. I was with German speaking friends, so I got to hear the little extras. There is no minimum age limit for the tour. It is bumpy, bouncy, and loud. It is a working mine, so there are trucks padding by blowing up dust etc. There is also a second tour that you can take where you ride in a rail car and go into a closed mine. We didn't take that tour - problems with tight spaces!

One of the most beautiful caves, that can be explored without guide! Just take a flashlight and (with common sense and being reasonable) start your walk! Beautiful landskape! Nice hike from the Präbichl down to the Gsolkurve...

While not the most spectacular old building we've seen in Austria this week, seems I'm a sucker for stained glass! This spectacle of a castle has lots of signage (in English!) regarding the history which naturally, goes way way back. Recent updates have modern bathrooms for visitors- bonus!
