El Carmen District

Reviewed By Rik214 - Vancouver, Canada

El Carmen is worth visiting because it is the center of Zapateo, an Afro-Andino music-dance genre. This is cotton and sugar cane country, so the "hacienda" plantations imported lots of African slaves, who were of course treated brutally. Among other things, drums were banned. Zapateo uses feet for percusion (and violin, brought from the Andes by indigenous workers) for melody. A good restaurant, called Africa, on the main plaza of this small town. Luxury accommodations at the Hacienda San Jose, 2 km out of town (50 centavos in a collectivo). The tour of the Hacienda San Jose will show you both the beauty and brutality.

Ballumbrosio Estate

Reviewed By Sukurlie - Bucharest, Romania

You just ask around El Carmen for the house. When you get there, you are invited in and given a brief summary of the history of Amador Ballumbrosio and his influence in Afro-Peruvian music. The family then proceeds to invite you to at least one of the many festivals that take part in the city. They do all this expecting nothing in return and with a big smile on their face. Lovely people.

Megaplaza Express Chincha

Reviewed By Meredith S - Durham, North Carolina

Chincha isn't a huge city, but Mega Plaza is a true waste of time if you're driving through and want to do some shopping and take a break from the car. There are what, 8 stores? A movie theater, and 3 restaurants. In my opinion, it was not worth the stop, especially since the few stores had nothing at good prices. I understand that locals might love this place, but I wouldn't recommend the mall for travelers looking to stop and shop a while!
