The woodland and dune-area west of Castricum are a protected natural area.Tickets can be bought at the ticket-vending machines at several locations.There are many nesting cormorants and other water-fowl near the lakes in the dunes.
I enjoyed the free museum "De HOEP" offering some stuffed animals and interesting literature about the natural area.The shop of "De Hoep" offers a large selection of books on wildlife.

You can walk there and go by bike, super nature around, just travel from the railway station (past our house), and head straight for the beach through the dunes.
Unspoilt and like an island, if you are lucky sunny as well, look for Heemskerk Baean de Vrijheit or even for Het Stille Strand. You will learn where Holland gets its cleanest water filtered by the dune sand! And the Romans were here first, followed by the Vikings and even the French, Russians and English before the Atlantikwall of the Germans.

Spent a great hour or so here learning about the history of the area. The museum is small but we'll designed. Where they have skeletons they been able to reconstruct faces. It's really intetesting to see. Very cheap entry €5 for adults and €2 for kids 11-17.
