Borovets Ski Resort

I was new to skiing and Borovets was a great resort to enable me to get some affordable lessons and to practice in a very relaxed and friendly environment. The slopes start directly from the middle of the resort so everything is close together and within walking distance, even when wearing ski boots!
Lots of restaurants, bars, pubs with a very friendly, affordable and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Can’t wait to go back!!!

The ski school at Yanakiev is really convenient for anyone staying in a nearby hotel, the equipment appeared to be good quality and well looked after. We had booked lessons prior to arriving and our first lesson went pretty well. We are total beginners so there was a lot of snow ploughing to be done! The second lesson however was not so great. The conditions were very icy and I immediately knew it would be a bad idea for me to attempt to ski so I went inside to warm up and my partner continued with the lesson. He was taken up the ski lift and with minimal guidance had to negotiate his way across a black run in order to get back down. Our instructor at times seemed frustrated at our inability and seemed to struggle to understand the basics as it was almost second nature to them. I don't think for a moment that they were aware that we felt uncomfortable as I don't think it was intentional but it did result in us finding another tutor who helped us progress quickly in our last few days. On the whole the staff in the shop were friendly, although one guy could be very curt (again i'm not sure it was intentional) I would use Yanakiev in future for equipment hire but not for lessons.

Tsarska Bistritsa

Reviewed By MinnieMad - West Yorkshire

This was the winter ski lodge of the Bulgarian Royal Family build over 100 years ago with a hydro electric plant to supply all its electricity. This is still working now and my partner loved it and found it really interesting. There is also some historical information in a gallery (all Cyrillic sadly) and a nice little cafe. You can walk through the grounds and sometimes go in the house although not when the royal family are in residence which they were when we went there. It was only 5 lev to go in.
We really enjoyed it. Bizarrely the royal family were deposed in 1946 but seem to have kind of carried on in an unofficial capacity, or at least doing what they always did but without the state paying for it! Perhaps our royals could learn a thing or two from that!

Borovets Mountain Bike Park

Borovets Bike Park is the largest in Bulgaria. Borovets Mountain Bike Park was launched in 2010 and offers 20 km total length of routes, with four levels of difficulty, equally suitable for beginners and experts. The pride of the park is its “downhill” track. It has a total length of 2400 meters, 440 meters with a displacement and meets the standards of the International Cycling Union for internat

One of the few Bulgarian Mountain Bike parks, Borovetes has many different tracks suitable to all abilities. I am personally not much of a downhill rider, I prefer more flowy trails with jumps and parabolics. During the past years Borovetes bike park has been developing a flow trail to differentiate from its typical downhill tracks of all difficulties. I have spent many fun days here, riding rental bikes which are provided along with all the safety gear necessary at a decent price.

We hadn't realised that this facility was now available in Borovets, but we are glad that we found it. We hired a court, racquets and balls for my family and some friends and had a great time. Very friendly, even if your not a skilled player and really good value. Another string to Borovets summer bow, top job.
