July 21, 2021 Brain Ambrose

Jaca (in Aragonese: Chaca or Xaca) is a city of northeastern Spain in the province of Huesca, located near the Pyrenees and the border with France. Jaca is an ancient fort on the Aragón River, situated at the crossing of two great early medieval routes, one from Pau to Zaragoza. Jaca was the city out of which the County and Kingdom of Aragon developed. It was the capital of Aragon until 1097 and also the capital of Jacetania.

Museo Diocesano de Jaca - Arte Romanico

"One of the most beautiful collections of romanesque wall paintings in the world" -Le Monde-

Reviewed By AlbertSalichs - Manresa, Spain

Museo Diocesano de Jaca is the art museum located inside the Jaca Cathedral, in the center of this town, located in Aragon Pyrenees, in the North of Spain. I went to visit the museum in the middle of August, but I did not have so many time and I had to visit it fastly, so I returned in the middle of September, because the Romanesque pictures are great! Really so interesting! In fact, in the first part of the museum, you will see all original Romanesque paintings from some churches in the surroundings of Jaca, which were ripped off the original wall in the middle of 20th Century. Nowadays it is not correct, but then it was the only possibility to save and keep these pictures. For me, a top in Jaca!

Monastery of San Juan de la Pena

Monastery of San Juan de la Peña (really two monasteries, the old and new ones) is located in the surroundings of Jaca, on mountains. In fact, it is also a picnic place, where can come all family to stay a day with a childen park and picnic tables close to the parking. Also, near the parking there is the new monastery, where you can see remains and a exposition about the history of old and new ones. Really interesting. After, we catch a bus to go to the old monastery (some kilometers far) and we could visit it in a guided visit. It is a building inside the rocks, so it is wonderful and curious. The guided visit was very interesting and the last cloister is fantastic. A very recommendable visit.

Ciudadela De Jaca

Take time for this. A lot to see in the one area of the fort. The fort alone is amazing and the museum within is special. If you have an interest in anything military or are interested in French history then this will suit you. It is nice just to stroll around outer walls as well. Certain times of year it closes at 2.00 pm, so this happened to us and we were a bit rushed.
