I did a private tour of the oil mill with Luciano, one of the owners. It was awesome learning more about the process, seeing the machinery and tasting so many delicious olive oils. There’s also some available for purchase. Would definitely recommend taking a trip out. :)

Azienda Agricola Poggio di Bortolone

The Azienda Agricola Poggio di Bortolone was founded by the Cosenza Family at the end of the eighteenth century, immediately after Sicily’s transition out of feudalism and the annexation by mainland Italy. Since that time it has been passed down from father to son and today Pierluigi Cosenza, Ignazio's son, is the current owner and manager of the Poggio di Bortolone Estate. Whilst embracing the long established Family traditions, introducing fresh and innovative ideas to build on the successes of the past. The land has been used for the cultivation of grapes, olives and wheat over many centuries and today the winery's ancient wooden press and traditional oil mill are to be found amongst the relics of bygone days to remind visitors of the proud origins of the Estate. The old and now redundant limestone watermill, beside the river Para Para, is being lovingly restored to its former splendour and is yet another reminder of past traditions which continued right up Word War II

If you are looking for one vineyard to visit for a tasting, this is the one! We called last-minute during harvest season, and even though they were very busy they still made time to receive us for a tasting the same afternoon even though we called the same day (tip: do call beforehand and let them prepare amply!) . They were very friendly and we got to hear a lot about the history of the area and of the grapes of the area. We had a great tasting of the wines they produce there with some very very tasty sicilian dishes which were sooo good, probably because of the locally sourced ingredients. And the wines are amazing, their frapatto is exactly the light bodied fruity wine I have always been searching for. We ended up buying a case of wine even though we didnt really have the space for it in our luggage, it was that good. I actually tried another cerasuolo di vittoria docg from another vineyard later on in my trip, and the one I had here was definitely much better. If you visit please do take his card and let him ship straight to you, I'm going to do the same as soon was we get through our case :)
