Volcanoes National Park

The "Parc National de Volcans" (or PNV as it's known by locals) lies along the Virunga Mountains, with 8 ancient volcanoes, which are shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Just a short two hour drive from Rwanda's capital of Kigali, the park is a central location for exploring some distinctly Rwandan experiences. While a visit to the mountain gorillas is often at the top of visitor, the dramatic landscape also offers thrilling hiking and visits to the fascinating golden monkeys.

This trip has been truly spectacular. Everything was well organised. Our guides, Eugene and Emmanuel were very knowledgable and witty, filling us with facts and stories on the Agashya gorilla family that we visited. Our porters were also very helpful as we went through muddy slopes in the jungle. I would definitely recommend hiring porters not only because they are helpful but also as a contribution to local economy. No words can express how amazing it was spending time with the gorillas in the wild and in such close proximity. Go see it for yourself!

We did the Canopy Trek one day and the Chimpanzee Trek is he next. Both were excellent. The guides were very good and the experiences were unforgettable. We also appreciated the traditional dancers after the Chimpanzee Trek. They were awesome. Nice touch.

Akagera National Park

Just two hours from Kigali, Akagera National Park is situated in the eastern province of Rwanda, on the border with Tanzania. The park covers an area of approximately 1,100 km² encompassing a unique and picturesque park, with rich diversity in wildlife and environments. The mountainous western boundary reaches altitudes of nearly 2000 metres in the Mutumba hills region, these highlands provide spectacular views over the expanse of lakes and papyrus swamps to the east, the largest protected wetland in Central Africa. On a national scale the Akagera region is an important area for large mammals in the country as the only protected savannah environment in Rwanda, complimenting the humid forests of Nyungwe National Park in the south of Rwanda and the afro-alpine habitats of Volcanoes National Park in the north. Akagera has an inspiring conservation story, under the public private partnership between conservation non-profit African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board.

This national park is so spectacular! My first safari experience and unforgettable.... Our guide MONICA was outstanding and she expertly took us to see giraffes, zebras, elephants, hippos etc... unfortunately we didn't see lions but we really didn't care-the day was so perfect! We definitely recommend getting a guide to see the park and TAKE A 4 X 4 or your car is going to break down-the roads are not paved. We also loved the boat tour-do it early morning and enjoy the serenity on the water and the bird life. We also did the night drive but didn't enjoy that as much-the best part of it was the night sky!
