Confirming as of Jan 2020 that there are still no check-points where you will be told to get a guide and you can do this easy hike independently. We did not go to lake danum, just to the meadow area and down. Enjoy :)

First time in this area since the wife left me, and wow, the memories came gushing back. Admittedly, it was a struggle to find, unlike the last time I recall, though it was about 6 yesrs ago. If you take a slow steady pace at first to take in the view, then pick up the pace towards the end, the rewards can be so pleasurable. I'm hoping to get back real soon, and hopefully there will a few friends with me to share the experience. Overall, a great time was had.
