Wongabel State Forest

Reviewed By WorldTravla7 - Cairns, Australia

This secluded and somewhat hidden pocket of rare & ancient mabi forest is an absolute dream. It is one of the few places the Lumholtz tree kangaroo inhabits (we didn’t see one on our visit despite lots of looking up to the treetops) & there are birds and wildlife galore (we saw a pademelon hopping through the forest at one point). There is lots of excellent interpretive signage (including some amazing grand fig trees) & the walk is flat & easy so you can easily take in the nature. Turn right on the Kennedy Highway heading out of Atherton. There is a sign to turn off but it’s small & easy to miss so keep your eyes peeled!

Wrights Lookout

Reviewed By WorldTravla7 - Cairns, Australia

McDonald Track is a great walk for those who want to get out and about and experience some great views and enjoy a good workout. The walk starts at Wrights Lookout which is an easy 200m from the car parking area in Kuranda. Off to the right of the lookout is the start of the track where you will see a gate across the access road. The track is 10km return and takes around 3 hrs. It includes the shorter Surprise Creek walking track for the first 1.6km (3.2km return) which takes you to a nice creek with a swimming area and mini-falls (those wanting a short walk could easily stop here and come back). There is some nice rainforest as well as open valleys on the walk and you get some great views of the Kuranda Range. The track is large and well defined and is actually a 4WD road that follows the power lines up the range and is used for maintenance access. For the extra adventurous, once you reach the end of the McDonald track you can link up with the Douglas track and head up to Glacier Rock for amazing views out to Cairns CBD and Mt Whitfield.

Windin Falls

Reviewed By WorldTravla7 - Cairns, Australia

This one is a hidden gem the will blow your mind. It’s a gorgeous waterfall opening out into an expansive valley of rainforest that goes on for hectares. You can swim in the freshwater creek upstream and enjoy everything nature has to offer. You do have to work for your views though as there is a 4.5km one way walk down to the falls with some steep sections. Getting there: It is an adventure in itself to get to the start of the walk down an unsealed track and a decent drive down to the start of the track via dirt road. It is a beautiful walk though through rainforest and diverse plant life so do not let this deter you. Drive toward Malanda on the Atherton Tablelands and turn off Lake Barrine Rd onto Topaz Rd. After a while you will come to the Old Cairns Track which leads to the start of the hike to Windin Falls. There are signs as you get close and you will see cars parked on the road. Note: Windin Falls is steadily becoming more popular with tourists due to the immense beauty. They mostly like to pose and take selfies in the infinity pool just before the drop which has become popular on Instagram so come earlier or later in the day if you want to enjoy the serenity without too many people. Also, there will be mud galore if there has been rain so think about scheduling your walk for the dry season when it will be drier and cooler. Take care close to the falls as it is a long drop down into the gorge and is potentially dangerous if you get too close to the edge.
