This is a dormant cone volcano reaching just under 6350m, and has a continuously snow covered top. A great sight, but note that certainly in summer, it is often partially or completely hidden by clouds and rain. If you stay multiple days, you are more likely to have a good view of its near perfect cone shape. Rains are starting earlier and are heavier in recent years in the altiplano, best time to go is November and December. There are several viewing points, the most famous is obviously with lago Chungara in front.

Lake Chungará is the highlight of a visit to Lauca. The weather was good but not perfect on the day we went, which meant we had occasional and not continuous views of the summit of 21,000 ft Parinacota. There is also much bird life — flamingos, gulls, coots, etc — and I spent at least an hour capturing them with my telephoto lens.

The drive to the salt flat is stunning. Various colours, changes in topography, lots of animals, saw the well hidden vizcacha which looks like a chinchilla and rabbit ears cross, flamingos. Stunning view of the salad de surfer with a mountain back drop. We also drove to a geothermal pool for a swim and the water was very hot! Great experience!
