5 Food & Drink in Pienza That You Shouldn't Miss

May 15, 2022 Florencio Paulino

Pienza, a town in Tuscany, is the "touchstone of Renaissance urbanism." In 1996, UNESCO declared the town a World Heritage Site and in 2004 the entire valley, the Val d'Orcia, was included on the list of Unesco’s World Cultural Landscapes. Pienza was the birthplace of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, who would become Pope Pius II. After he became Pope, Piccolomini had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town that would serve as a retreat from Rome.

Fabbrica Pienza

Located just a few kilometers from Pienza, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Fabbrica is in a new wine cellar of rare beauty. The cellar is perfectly integrated in to this land, surrounded by century old olive trees standing proudly against the blue sky and alongside visible traces of an ancestral vineyard. The winery is located close to the main house, surrounded entirely by vineyards. The hand-harvested grapes arrive in the cellar, where they are selected by hand and vinified. The wines are then oak-aged and bottled here. The winery is also the place where we offer our unique wine tour and tastings. All our wines since 2013, our very first vintage, are organic. Since 2016 they are officially certified so.

Beautiful, modern winery with views of Pienza, Monte Amiata, and the surrounding hillsides. We've visited a few times and are always impressed by the warm hospitality. We've always felt welcome, even when arriving towards the end of their opening hours or interrupting another group's tasting appointment. The tours and tastings are customized to your level of knowledge, interest, and time, and do not sound like canned speeches unlike at some other wineries. The pours are generous, and the wines (and olive oils) are excellent. Fabbrica has struck the balance of being a closely-held, family-owned winery, but professionally run by a team who is clearly passionate about their wine. You can tell a lot of thought went into the design of the winery and tasting rooms, with every detail considered, and that also shows through in their approach to winemaking. Highly recommend making an appointment or just walking in!
