Lower Saxony (German: Niedersachsen [ˈniːdɐzaksn̩], Low German: Neddersassen) is a German state (Land) situated in northwestern Germany. It is the second largest state by land area, with 47,624 square kilometres (18,388 sq mi), and fourth largest in population (7.9 million) among the sixteen Länder federated as the Federal Republic of Germany. In rural areas Northern Low Saxon, a dialect of Low German, and Saterland Frisian, a variety of the Frisian language, are still spoken, but the number of speakers is declining.

Marksmen`s Fair Hannover

Over 600 years old, this annual July funfair celebrates the marksman. Whether you're a lover of a classic bow and arrow or the hefty firearm, Schützenfest is all about celebrating those that aim for the bull’s-eye. It originated back in 1529 when Duke Erich I granted the city its first ten-day event. However, even before then, Hannover had long been a fan of the crossbow with regular competitions taking place in the town. Now a modern day extravaganza, the fair draws in the young and old, marksman or not, with its wild rides, beer tents, and shooting galleries. While alcohol and arrows might not be the best combination, it’s ten days of authentic German fun that people travel from all over to see.
