Cathedral

Reviewed By kpiddy - Brisbane, Australia

For a small Danube Bend town we weren't expecting such a large and impressive cathedral which has an equally large rectangular paved forecourt. Built around 1761, this is the fourth church to have been built here since the eleventh century. It is said that the style of architecture is French, neoclassic and late Baroque, in any case it is very impressive with columns on the entry, two clock towers, statues above the front facade and a rear dome. As Sunday mass was in progress we did not enter the cathedral to view the interior.

The Franciscan Church and Friary

Reviewed By kpiddy - Brisbane, Australia

This Franciscan church has a very interesting history, it is the oldest church in the town and was constructed using the stones from the ruins of an old fortress destroyed by the Turks in 1685. Built in the eighteenth century in baroque-rocco style, the church is one of many beautiful buildings which faces onto Marcius 15 Ter, the main square of Vac. But it is what happened in 1995 during the renovations of the church that placed a greater focus on the church, the discovery of a secret crypt and 262 coffins with some very well preserved bodies due to the perfect climate within the crypt. The mummies are now on display in the Memento Mori also on the square.
