5 Castles in Austria: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 29, 2023 Timmy Ribble

As home to majestic mountains, opulent palaces, and high culture, Austria's attractions are classically sumptuous and enduring. But beyond the waltzes, the strudels, the alpine summits, and Habsburg architecture, its modern cities are proof of just how easily Austria combines the contemporary with the historic.

A great stay at a graet place

Everything was great and pleasant. However, the only grievance, which we voiced to the Check-out desk, was that the wine refrigerator, which is part of the "Winzer Rooms" was unacceptably loud. Since it is wired directly to the board, it was not possible for us to "unplug" the fridge. However, after many attempts, we were able to use the display to switch the fridge off. I suggested to the hotel staff, to make the "switch-off" easier in order not to disturb the sleep of the guests.

Go for the fun castle experience, not the amenities

Reviewed By Corinne W

Our family was so excited to stay here for a night on our European roadtrip. We had read the reviews and directly booked a room in the castle, not the adjoining hotel (and the lady at reception was very helpful responding to my questions on email). The castle is impressive as you drive up the hill. There isn't really anything to do but it was fine to sit at the picnic tables outside and kids played on the small playground. We skipped the local dinner at the hotel (reserve in advance, closes by 18.00. Reception is only open 9-16.00 and no one is around after that.) and walked the 10 min to the pizza restaurant which was just fine for a night (closes by 21.00). The rooms are big but have mismatched old furniture and paintings that give it a very musty, old smell. The kids had a pullout bed and we had a very creaky old bed. The bathroom is big but don't expect anything more than toilet paper..bring your own shampoo and soap... you would think for the price you would have some basic amenities but you really are paying for the castle experience, not luxury. The bummer thing was there was a small group that was talking until 23.00 in the central courtyard so it was extremely loud. And it was quite hot in the room so not the best sleep. Breakfast the next morning was decent (reserve beforehand) with yummy breads, soft boiled eggs, meats, cheeses, jam, coffee, etc. We then walked through the 4 floors of the castle museum which was a lot of fun...there is a knight room where you can try on the helmets, hold a spear, sit on a horse, etc...the highlight for the kids. It took us about an hour and used the English translation from the reception so we could understand what each room was about. Unfortunately there weren't any tours being held due to corona but walking around was more than fine. All in all, the family did enjoy the experience and it was worth it for 1 night. I definitely wouldn't stay there if you can only get a room in the hotel (only 9 rooms in the castle). And if you go knowing that the room experience isn't ideal than you will enjoy it.

lovely traditional food in rural setting with amazing views. A few flies and rural smells, but your're surrounded by farmland. Well cooked local food. Friendly helpful staff who were pleased to advice and guide.

Wonderful weekend in castle hotel

Reviewed By Explore788339

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed two nights in July over a weekend. The hotel and restaurant staff were friendly and always ready to help. The Kaiser Suite was clean and well furnished. A plus was that it is just two floors above the castle church, so we could walk down to mass and continue to breakfast after. My wife had a good quality massage from Maria in the hotel wellness. And the gourmet dinners were lovely. The castle is in a quiet area, which is good for relaxing away from the city, but close enough to Zwettl for shopping and sightseeing.

Simply the best for us in Südsteiermark

Reviewed By andreacomo33

Every year we come from Italy to this gorgeous place and every year we are literally delighted by its charme, beauty and serenity: this Schloss is simply a little paradise! The team is PERFECT: dear Tina, dear Natascha and dear Martin THANK you sooooo much for your Gastfreundlichkeit. You are so professional, friendly, helpful and really nice people. We truly love you! The Schloss would not be the same without you: you perfectly fit and embody that certain steirische Gemütlichkeit that is simply enchanting. For us is like being at home. We cannot wait to meet you again in 2021. Till then take care and enjoy your time. Our deepest gratitude for making unforgettable our days at the castle. PS1: Mrs. Jolanda Melcher and Mr. Fritz Melcher are simply GREAT! We really much regret that Martina had to go back home to Vorarlberg. We hope to meet her again next year. PS2: sorry but I need to mention it: the new chairs im Hof are by far not so comfortable as the old ones :-)
