St Mary's Church

We loved wandering in and around this lovely church, with its surrounding views and ancient graveyard, the stones of which have stories to tell. Most beautiful are the bells that sing out across the town. The bell ringers practise every Friday night, treating tourists to a free concert. While we were there we followed the sound of the bells into the bell tower where we were allowed to watch the bell ringers at work.

We searched the town for somewhere relaxed and open on a Monday and nearly gave up. This beer hall is coffee serving as well and was full of families, etc relaxing in a very comfortable atmosphere. A talented visitor was playing the piano and little ones were dancing to it. Coffee was very good as was the food, however the eating thing isn't their strong point, but 'so what' in terms of the overall experience. Watch out for the traffic wardens - a current story is of a warden who was told of a lady lying ill in a shop and fined here anyway. The disgusted owners paid her fine. Almost as bad a Penrith if you go there!

The circular walk from the town centre down the radical steps via devils bridge was brilliant, the river views just lovely. A very worthwhile short and easy walk.
