Riwaka River Estate

Nelson's smallest winery. Situated in very picturesque surroundings, set between two national parks and close to the beautiful beach of Kaiteriteri. Our award winning, family owned estate produces "Resurgence," individual, handcrafted artisan wines of unique and distinctive character from limestone soils and a lot of passion. Cellar door tastings, sales and vineyard tours available.

We stayed in Riwaka at Chalets at Terraced Gardens for two nights in early January. After passing so many wineries on our way in, I didn't know where to start! I asked Jane, the owner of the Chalets, if she had a recommendation and she said we should definitely stop by Riwaka River Estate. We had just about an hour until they closed, and then wanted to head to dinner, so we thought the timing was perfect. We arrived to a charming home, with a gorgeous little porch off the selling room/bar. A sweet, mellow pup greeted us upon arrival, along with Paul's smiling face. He invited our 9 year old son to enjoy the trampoline tucked away in the back yard. We stayed a little more than half an hour, just my partner and I, learning about Paul's winery, his three varieties (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay), and seeing the grapes up close even! He has a stunning vineyard, a clear passion for wine, and was so easy to chat with. We bought a few of each type of wine, and look forward to returning in future years when we can get back to New Zealand! This is a lovely, unpretentious vineyard with loads of charm and character nestled in Riwaka. Definitely make the stop when you're in town!

By appointment during the winter months (just give us a call or email): Meet us, taste our wines, enjoy our art gallery and a stroll through our family vineyard in the beautiful Moutere hills near Nelson, with stunning views to the snow-topped Kahurangi mountains. Our wines are crafted from hand-picked vines on Flaxmore’s north-facing slopes. Clay-gravels, climate and attention to detail have resulted in fine, balanced wines which fully express our vineyard’s special character. We have just opened our unique gallery with a range of art from local and NZ artists, encompassing photography, painting and sculpture. A permanent art collection is also on display to enjoy along with your wine tasting and vineyard walk. You can visit us every weekend through the Summer (Oct-Easter) from 10 until 5 or, if you'd like to visit on weekdays, just give us a call or text. During Winter (Apr-Sept), call us for an appointment.

Rimu Grove Winery

Rimu Grove is committed to producing the finest wine that reflects the terroir of the Nelson Moutere winegrowing region. The Rimu Grove philosophy starts with an uncompromising desire to produce the best wines possible. Meticulous management in the vineyard produces grapes with a fine balance of varietal flavours, textures and aromas. The fruit and wine are handled carefully to retain and accentuate those delicate characteristics. Every effort is made to produce the finest wine.

We got there soon after opening and we’re soon joined by 4 from Vienna. The Polish guy serving us had travelled everywhere before ending up in Nelson and knew everything about the wines and their grapes. Very nice wines. I bought a bottle of the Rimu Pinot Noir which was really excellent and probably half the price of an equivalent Otago Pinot.

Himmelsfeld Vineyard

The story of Beth Eggers and Himmelsfeld Vineyard is one of faith, family, history and determination. Beth's main point of difference is having aged NZ wines for sale, she takes the time to cellar them anything from four to six years before releasing. Truly boutique, with just three acres of vines, one each of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay & Cabernet Sauvignon, Himmelsfeld is a must to visit and taste unique NZ wines.

I've been here 4 times and will be back again soon. This is a unique experience. The only place I know where I have to negotiate for more wine than Beth wants to sell to me! Love the place, and love the whole premise of why this place exists. I even enjoy the fact that sometimes I arrive and there is no one there. it is what it is, enjoy.

Seifried Estate Winery & Vineyard

From the beautiful Waimea Plains come the inspired and innovative wines of the South Island's oldest family winery, Seifried Estate. Harvested from Estate grown, 'Sustainably Accredited' vineyards scattered throughout the Nelson region, this is a winery with a focus and passion for beautifully crafted wines. From humble beginnings in the Moutere Valley near Nelson in 1973, Seifried Estate has grown to become synonymous with sustainability, quality, innovation and family values. The family business has grown and now farms over 250 hectares of vines, with their wines being sold in 22 countries, including having established themselves as a familiar and favoured brand in New Zealand. A leading producer of Nelson Sauvignon Blanc, Seifried has also gained a reputation for interesting and unusual varieties, including Grüner Veltliner, Würzer and Zweigelt - paying homage to Hermann's Austrian heritage. In September 2014, Hermann and Agnes were acknowledged for their tremendous contribution to New Zealand wine and inducted as Fellows of New Zealand Winegrowers. They made history as the first husband and wife team to be recognised and it was also the first time a woman has been honoured. The passion has been passed on with all three of the Seifried "children" now home and working in the company. Each brings experience and knowledge gained in various roles around the world. The grandchildren have also become regulars at the winery, eager to help and get their hands (and feet!) dirty, and follow in "Opa and Nana's" footsteps. A family business, sharing their wines with the world. And home to the fabulous Sweet Agnes Riesling - New Zealand's most awarded dessert wine.
