10 Walking Tours in Versailles That You Shouldn't Miss

January 18, 2022 Jeremy Dunfee

This former unofficial capital of France sits just 10 miles from Paris and is easily reachable by train. Even though the Chateau de Versailles has been known as the epitome of indulgent luxury for centuries, seeing it in person is a jaw-dropping experience. The chateau's magnificent gardens are free, but it's worth shelling out for a day ticket to see the interior—although it does make going back to even a fancy hotel seem rather humdrum.

Our tour guide Paloma was very knowledgeable about arts and she had true passion for arts, which made a whole difference for us. We learned a lot from her. Without Paloma, the entire art collection would have meant nothing nearly as profound as this. Our 7 year old son truly fully engaged for the whole time and he probably learned more than all of us. Truly worth the money!

We had an excellent experience with out Memories France guide Caroline at the Musee D'Orsay. We met for a two hour tour on a Saturday morning - there were 6 of us in the small group. Caroline was very knowledgeable and provided background on many paintings to give us a depth of understanding we would never have had otherwise. Who would have known that the face in a painting of a funeral procession was the face of the Emperor of France, and what was being buried under the funeral pall was liberty? Many insight such as these made for an educational and informative tour. Highly recommend.

We could not find our guide anywhere! So much for “skip the ques” we were told to go through initial security and the guide would be inside. It took 40 min to get through 1st security. Once inside, we showed our tickets to another visitor helper, we said we were having a guided tour. He directed us to the elevator cue and our guide would be up the top. I didn’t think that was right, so I texted the number on the booking, then called it, no response or answer, so we were directed to the lift, packed in like sardines, then once on level 2, you could hardly move for the swarm of people, there is no way you could find anyone!! We had also booked for the summit, and paid for it, only to find the summit closed for renovations when we got there. That’s probably why level 2 was so packed as no one could get up. We walked around both level 2 and level 1 but did not see any kind of tour group. So we ended up doing our own thing. I might as well have just joined the normal Like when I got there and saved a whole lot of money. I’ve done other tours and trips, but nothing was a disaster like this

The gardens to the west of the Palace of Versailles are unparalleled. On this self guided audio tour, you can meditate in the embrace of 200,000 trees, admire the artistry of 221 sculptures and marvel at the spectacle of 55 fountains shooting water as high as seven meters into the air. But this tour is more than just a pleasant stroll. By the end of it, you’ll be looking at the park in a totally different way. Our focus is on the hidden messages left by King Louis XIV. They’re lost to average visitors today, 300 years after their creation, but I’ll reveal them to you. The Sun King, as he was known, left absolutely nothing to chance in the gardens, and the details told a story that his subjects understood loud and clear. If you are intrigued by history, mythology, numerology, hydrography, meteorology or astronomy this is a tour for you!

Inclusions: Lifetime access to this tour in English, VoiceMap App for Android and iOS, Offline access to audio, maps, and geodata

Exclusions: Tickets or entrance fees to any museums or other attractions en route, Smartphone and headphones, Transportation, Food/Drink
