10 Walking Tours in Guadalajara That You Shouldn't Miss

September 23, 2021 Venice Greaves

The inland city of Guadalajara is bursting with history and culture. Many attractions are in the city's historic center and in the neighboring city of Zapopan. Museums, parks and churches flourish alongside bullfights, rodeos and soccer (futbol). Nearby are the towns of Tequila, where the liquor of the same name is produced, and Tlaquepaque and Tonala, where artisans create an abundance of Mexican handicrafts. Mariachi, which originated in the area, is a common sight and sound in Guadalajara.

Walking in the city's historic barrios, plazas and markets, you will discover its unique personality while learning how historical events have shaped its urban and social landscape throughout the centuries. You will also discover Guadalajara's fundamental landmarks, including: 1. The Cathedral 2. Hospicio Cabañas (home to the murals of Jose Clemente Orozco) 3. In this private food experience you will visit 2 traditional, working-class markets to taste Guadalajara's most emblematic dishes: 1. Tacos de Barbacoa: shredded beef tacos with a unique mix of spices, 2. Torta ahogada: Mexico’s version of pulled pork, served in a salsa-drowned crispy sandwich, 3. Birria: a juicy and delicious hearty goat stew. Served with hand-made tortillas, lime, onions, salsa. Our experience will begin in San Juan de Dios, the biggest indoor market in Latin America and the ultimate food and shopping paradise! Here we will visit a taco stand that I’ve known since childhood to try barbacoa. We'll also try tortas ahogadas at the market's most traditional stand. Then we will visit Mercado Corona to taste the seasonal food products. As we explore, I will explain the origins of Mexican cuisine and the city's history. We will also admire the Cathedral and its surrounding landmarks. Finally, we will visit the 19th-century neighbourhood of Nueve Esquinas to try birria.

This tour was a great day. Not only do you get an I -depth look at the Tequila making process, but you also get some free time to n the town of Tequila and you get to experience a local tequila cocktail on your way home. My tour guide was awesome. She spoke excellent English, was passionate and knows all about the Tequila process and was Fun to spend the day with. In addition, the tour vehicle had cold water and snacks to keep you refreshed throughout the day. Th tour started by getting picked up right at your hotel. We then drove to an agave field where we stopped and actually walked through the field. Then we drove to the Yres Mujares tequileria where we were shown how they make their tequila. They take you into their cave and you get to taste their tequila. It was fascinating to see how tequila is made manually. Then we drove to the Herradura Tequila Erica. This was a fascinating tour as they are a large production factory. We got to see how they shave the pina before baking and went through their original factory which is now set up like a museum. And of course, lots of samples there as well. We then drove to the town of Tequila and we drove around the main square to get the lay of the land. Then we had a couple of free hours to grab our own lunch and walk around. It is a beautiful little town and you will wish you had more time to see it all. Then on our way home we stopped at a popular place to grab a local tequila cocktail, served in a large ceramic bowl that you get to keep. It took a little while to adjust to the taste but by the end of the bowl I liked it a lot. Finally a relaxing drive back to my hotel. This is an awesome tour, both the actual itinerary and the tour guide. If I could give 6 stars, then this tour would get them!! I recommend this tour to anyone who is looking to really learn about the tequila-making process and the town of Tequila with a great tour company!!
