Fort Napoleon

Near the harbour, Fort Napoleon is a 5-sided brick fortification with a 10-metre high moat surrounding it. It was built in 1811 by Napoleon. Napoleon built this fort as defence against a possible invasion from England, but despite its impressiveness, the fort never saw action as the British invasion never came, and the last stone was laid when his empire fell in 1814. I'm sure the French soldiers must have been bored to tears. During WWI it was used as a mess for German officers & later on as a museum. Today visitors can tour the fort & despite the lack of military action or anything of historic significance, I still enjoyed walking around, exploring. Sometimes it's also used as an exhibit space (the exhibits change every few months or so). There are also cultural activities sometimes as well. You can also have a nice relaxing visit to the bistro.
