Cable Car Beatenberg-Niederhorn

Why should you visit Niederhorn? What an easy question. You have the best view over the Alps and even more so of the stunning Lake Thun which lies directly in front of the beautiful mountain scape. So, grab your camera and come and visit the Neiderhorn where you can capture the mountains, lakes, cows and all other Swiss beauty in one perfect picture.

We were taking a day-trip, driving around the north side of Lake Thun and, of course, going up the Niederhorn was on our list of things to do. We parked at the garage at Beatenbucht Station and took the funicular railway train to Beatenberg, which is probably 1/4th of the way up. From there we switched to the aerial cable car (gondola) for the ride to the summit. The ride takes you to an elevation 6,440 feet, providing a fantastic panoramic view of Lake Thun and the entire Bernese Alps. The ascending trip takes about an hour and the photo ops are endless. At the top, there is a restaurant, a playground for the kids, and numerous hiking trails. It was a beautiful afternoon and we could have hopped on one of the trails for a long scenic hike but instead, we just walked along the ridge on one of the trails for a short distance. We then got a table on the patio of the restaurant, enjoyed the view, and had some coffee and cake. The views of the Alps were spectacular: some of the best that we saw on our vacation. The ride up is a little expensive, but how many times will you get a chance to do this? A "must" place to visit while you are in Switzerland.

2 8yr olds loved the short cable car ride up to the toboggan run which is on a loop so you can go on as many times before you come down. 8 yr olds were allowed on the run alone. We went on with ours first to get an idea of the speed, rules and general feel of the run as suggested by the staff. 1 was confident to go on a couple of runs by himself and loved it. Free small bouncy castle zip wire and playground for younger ones plus the cafe were good ideas. To save money we only paid for the cable car up the mountain and walked down which took about 90 mins with the kids. Whilst some parts of the descent were a bit hazardous both children managed it with little or no assistance. Definitely recommended...both parents also lives the toboggan!

The restaurant/hotel at the top of the Niesen was built in 1856, 50 years before the funicular. In 2002 was the opening of the clear-cut, geometrically-designed and transparent restaurant pavillon to the public. The modern, functional architecture catches the eye and stands in contrast to the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains. Discover and enjoy the special atmosphere of the Niesen, its good food and fantastic alpine panorama.

One of the crown jewels in the Interlaken area; off the beaten path, normal tourist won't make it here but, it's one the most spectacular rides in the Bernese Oberland area. Slightly more expensive than most funiculars but, ride is a part of the Bernese-Oberland Regional Pass Network; reserve minimum of 3 hours. The hiking trail to the top offers spectacular views, Class 1 all the way with numerous switch backs; reserve 5 hours to hike to the top. We will hike next time. The restaurant at the top is good.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

What does an Alpine paradise look like? Probably quite like Matterhorn glacier paradise. The peak with Europe’s highest mountain station soars 3'883 metres above sea level. The peak lift takes you up to the 360º viewing platform. The view from there is like paradise. You can see an incredible 38 four-thousand-metre peaks and 14 glaciers. And a must-see in Zermatt’s glacier paradise: a real glacier palace. Up above, there is a cinema lounge, fine cuisine, superb ski slopes and a little lower, on Trockener Steg or Schwarzsee, hiking and biking trails. And on top of that many unforgettable experiences the whole year round ...

The day that we spent at The Matterhorn Glacier paradise (and Gornergrat with our Peak to Peak pass) was prob our best in Switzerland. The views atop this mountain paradise were out of this world...the cable cars to get up there?!?! Magnificent... We loved the viewing stations, tunnel through the glacier with ice sculptures and restaurant up there. The movie area with short films about the area was also really neat, we watched them all. Some people might think this area is just for skiers, but it is not. We rode up in gondolas full of skiers, but we rode down alone and really enjoyed the views. Take your time and do the Peak to Peak ticket bundle if you can. We saved 50% because we had a Swiss Travel Pass. Getting up to the top is not cheap, but it is WORTH IT.

Rothorn

The best view of the Matterhorn The Rothorn is easily reached from Sunnegga in just 15 minutes. From here, you can see the Matterhorn from its most photogenic side. An added attraction is that you see all 38 four-thousandmetre peaks that surround Zermatt. We recommend: It is worth to get up early and enjoy the magnificent view at sunrise! A special item of interest up here is the themed hiking trail “Peak Collection” around the restaurant Rothorn. This special outdoor exhibition of 18 sculptures will connect you on an artistic level with the Alpine world of Zermatt and its many tales. Zermatt’s most beautiful mountain lake The Stellisee lake at 2,537 metres (8,323 ft) is the most-photographed lake in Zermatt. For sure, you have already marvelled yourself at a photo of the Stellisee, capturing the fascinating reflection of the Matterhorn. From Blauherd, you can reach the idyllic Stellisee in about 20 minutes. The famous flower trail also starts at Blauherd. This unique hike offers an unparalleled diversity of flowering plants. Your excursion can be ideally combined with a break at Stellisee lake or the sunrise ride.
