Panajachel (Spanish pronunciation: [panaxaˈtʃel], Pana) is a town in the southwestern Guatemalan Highlands, less than 90 miles from Guatemala City, in the department of Sololá. It serves as the administrative centre for the surrounding municipality of the same name. The elevation is 1,597 metres (5,240 ft). Population was 11 thousand in the 2000 census, estimated as 15,000 now (Insituto Nacional de Estadística de Guatemala), and has approximately doubled each of the last few decades. The town of Panajachel is located on the Northeast shore of Lake Atitlán, and has become a centre for the tourist trade of the area as it provides a base for visitors crossing the lake to visit other towns and villages.

This hike very known will guide you through stunning views, so be prepared. We will begin from Santa Cruz la Laguna and will end in San Marcos la Laguna. It is a up and down trail 9 km long. Relatively easy I recommended this hike for all ages. • Lake view • Mayan Villages • Corn and beans field • Pickup/drop off: Panajachel or Lake Atitlan Area. • Lenght: 4 hours total (2 hrs hike) • Begin at 7:30 am.

Okay FIRST OF ALL, Salvador is the best guide we’ve had out of four trips here. The hike was either incredibly hard or we were very out of shape ???? but he worked with us to still have an amazing time. We ended up also birdwatching and found many Quetzales. It was a beautiful time. He’s super knowledgeable, very kind, speaks English/Spanish, and even will offer you a raincoat if you tell him ahead of time! :) I would recommend this hike if you’re a cross fitter or really in to long hikes, but if recommended Salvador taking you anywhere whether you are traveling alone as a female, or this is your first time in Guatemala, or you’re in a family with kids, or a business trip, or literally whatever- he’s the guy!! We felt safe and taken care of the entire day. We can’t wait to come back and see more with him next year and the years to come.

From the very beginning, Salvador was very responsive in all communication with us. This was our first trip to Guatemala and so his experience and help was invaluable. He coordinated transportation from Panajachel to the trail head a couple hours away. Throughout our excursion he was extremely organized with every detail, making sure that we had all the supplies we needed, porters, excellent food and encouragement. I will say that hiking Acatenengo is physically challenging and may not be the best option for those not in very good physical shape. Some in our group found it easier than others. I kept a much slower pace and appreciated how Salvador stayed back with me and made sure that everyone was safe and having a good time. We noticed Salvador taking some pictures and shooting short videos throughout thei trip but didn’t think much of it. We were absolutely delighted and so grateful to get some fantastic photos and a short video that he had compiled of our adventure after we returned home. If you are looking for someone who is very kind, organized, passionate and knowledgeable about his country and very experienced… Then Salvador is your guide! We highly recommend him and his team. The views and sounds of nearby El Fuego erupting all throughout the night at base camp and then watching more eruptions and a breathtaking sunrise from the summit are memories that our family will treasure for a lifetime!!
