10 Top-Rated Hotels in Viana do Castelo, Viana do Castelo District, Northern Portugal

August 8, 2022 Darwin Bolte

A self-guided walking tour is the best way to appreciate the stunning architecture of Viana do Castelo. The buildings date from several different centuries so styles vary: highlights include the early 20th-century Basilica of Santa Luzia; the 16th-century fountain and former city hall building at the Praça da República; the gothic Cathedral on the Largo da Matriz; and the Monument to Caramuru and Paraguaçu, built just a few years ago in 2009.

Pousada Viana do Castelo

The Pousada de Viana do Castelo is located atop the Monte de Santa Luzia, in Viana do Castelo. Lofty and elegant, it further enhances the beauty of the city of Viana do Castelo. It features one of Portugal's most dazzling views of the mountain, the city, the Lima river, the Atlantic Ocean and the iconic Templo de Santa Luzia which, located just a few hundred metres from the hillside, frames and fills the landscape and the view. Inaugurated in 1921, this Pousada was born of the excellent restoration and remodelling of the Hotel de Santa Luzia, maintaining its stately features that make it so unique, such as its high granite walls and broad archways. During your stay, you can take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool and enjoy the view of the Serra de Santa Luzia, the city of Viana do Castelo, as well as the gorgeous Lima river and its mouth. If you would like to relax or rejuvenate yourself, schedule at massage at our Magic Spa. Feast on minhota cuisine at the Pousada's restaurant and enjoy the sophisticated and welcoming bar, with balconies and terraces for you to admire the view. The rooms offer free Wi-Fi and feature panoramic views over the estuary of the Lima river and the city.

Pay very close attention to your restaurant and bar bill!

This hotel is in a tremendous location. Our room, while simple, had a gorgeous view. We were able to check-in early, and the front desk provided great information on how to walk to the funicular through a private path to access the town. So far so good! We had dinner at the restaurant (ok) and 2 bar charges. This was when things went awry. Upon check out, the charges didn't seem to add up correctly, so we asked to see the receipts. In all 3 cases there were random items added to our bill, to the tune of 75 extra euros! It really seemed intentionally scammy - I can understand one mistake, but all three!? It took over 20 minutes with the front desk to straighten out and get a refund for the over-charge. Not sure if this is just a one-time thing or common practice at this hotel. Please make sure you look at your bill carefully.

Smart hotel - friendly

It's an upmarket smart hotel. Modern - the floors number down from reception at level 4. Rooms very comfortable. It's location was good for us. It's across the river from the main town but then you do get the view across the river. We didn't have a lot of spare time but did venture across the metal bridge built by Eiffel - of Paris fame.

Quinta do Monteverde

This manor house was built in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Cunha Lobo Barbosa and Sottomayor family just 1 km from the sea. In 1820, the Genoese Judge Luigi Vital Monteverdi married the owner of the estate and the house became to be known as Quinta do Monteverde. The manor house was completely renovated but the interior retains the touch of the seventeen hundreds. Quinta de Monteverde is a walled estate between the hills and the sea and close to the river mouth. In Castelo do Neiva, the sandy beach rolls on and on; sand dunes and unspoilt stretches lend a wonderful sense of isolation to the surroundings.

As we entered the property by car through tall wooden gates we felt like we'd time-traveled back to the 17th century albeit with 21st century appointments. The grounds are large and impeccably maintained with beautiful stonework lush vegetation and gorgeous flowers. The main house is spectacular while our two-story apartment with dining/living room full kitchen and master suite were a very welcome change from the cozy Porto B&B we'd left that morning. Simon gave us a thorough tour pointing out the common (game, honor bar) rooms the dining hall and the swimming pool. He continued to be very helpful during out two-night stay. An abundant breakfast is served in a stunning hall with period furniture. Our only regret: that our schedule didn't permit a longer stay!

Lovely hotel centrally located

We stayed at CMA after a road trip around Galicia. On arrival Daniella and her colleague could not have been more welcoming, with information about the hotel and a festival in town, making us comfortable around the pool - bringing us drinks and even rearranging furniture for our group. Our room was spacious, with beautiful old furniture in keeping with the historical building and excellent soundproofing to the street. Viana is a lovely town and after an evening out we were warmly welcomed on the garden terrace for a nightcap or two ! Negatives - the bathroom shower was not fixed and there was a curtain rather than screen. Breakfast was plentiful but coffee and selection of proteins could be improved. Overall the hotel exceeded our expectations and the staff are clearly proud of their hotel and a credit to the business.

Lovely, beautiful place to relax

Stayed few nights with my husband and really enjoyed our stay. Very clean and nicely decorated room and the other areas in the house. Peaceful and sophisticated atmosphere. Older, friendly couple around at all times and their son who speaks good English whenever there was a need. Everything was smooth and convenient what comes to checking-in/ out, even for parking they came out to the street to guide us. Breakfast was superior, not huge selection but everything was top quality. There are two good restaurants down the street from the residence. Only one piece of warning is that the residence is on a hill and there are also stairs inside so be prepared to walk a bit. There is a sufficient pool to take a short swim and lay on sunbeds. Actually it is very nice and non-windy place as the wind at the beach was pretty hard, not ideal for sunbathing. But the beach was very nice for walking to the next village for good lunch, and come back by train. And for watching the sunset!
