10 Top-Rated Hotels in Soweto, Johannesburg, Greater Johannesburg, Gauteng

August 14, 2022 Madelene Haan

An acronym for South Western Townships, Soweto was dubbed as such in 1963. The area began in the late 19th century as a temporary neighborhood for gold mine workers, then later became a black Johannesburg ghetto with forced apartheid settlement. In 1976, Soweto garnered international headlines with its deadly uprising against Afrikaans-only language education. The Mandela Family Museum and the recently restored Credo Mutwa Village (with its Zulu and Sotho homesteads) are two can't-miss sights.

We found Lungy accidentaly as a tourgide for our bycicle tour in Soweto, but we were very pleased it happend like this. Lungy showed us a lot, but especialy learned us a lot about the history of Soweto. He realy toke time to tell us about this history and gave us insight in the daily life of some people in Soweto, wich was not easy. Sometimes confrontating to see how even the ANC government was not ok for the people living here.

Fabulous stay

I really enjoyed my stay at the Bed and Breakfast. My room was spacious and clean, the bed very comfy, and the breakfast just perfect. Nthateng was a wonderful host. Very caring and considerate. On my first night, Nthateng walked me to a local restaurant for dinner and introduced me to the staff. A lovely gesture. Nthateng also put me in touch with a local artist, guide and NGO worker who gave me a terrific and very informative full-day walking of Soweto, including a few places off the beaten tourist route. All-in-all, a fabulous stay.

Great B&B within walking distance of the Main Street of Soweto for food, entertainment and fun. The room was nice and although we had to share the bathroom with one other person, it worked out well. No A/C although our nights were cool. Only downside was on Saturday night a neighbor was having a very loud outdoor dance party until at least 2 a.m. I guess this is Soweto! We felt lucky to have found this place.

We had a lovely lunch here

Reviewed By Carolyn B

We stopped here for lunch, though we didn't stay in the B&B. It's a culinary school, where very friendly students prepare and serve the meal. There were a lot of fresh vegetables--beets, pumpkin and spinach and barbecued chicken, beef and rice. They also served steamed bread. The food is good and the experience is quite interesting.

Black people should stop doing businesses in black communities..as they don't have customer service skills..

We did an online booking..got a confirmation ref no..We get there two guys were standing at the reception they looked dodge..They didnt care to even greet us, they seemed surprised by our visit. We then told them about our reserved online booking. They didn't even know about our booking...They pretended to be paging through a book, and didnt even confirm the booking. They just gave us an attitude throughout the conversation. Then after a while, we asked them if the room is available. They replied by saying err..will see if there's any left from the other property..Then my partner suggested while being upset..that we should leave as it's very clear that we are not welcomed here..The other guy answered saying no problem you can leave..I just don't understand..how black businesses operate..My advise to anyone is to just go support white people's businesses..as they understand the significance of how a customer should be treated..Bad service.. will never go to any guest house in soweto..
