Little Hostel

Little hostel is a new hostel in town which is provide very clean room and nice place for people to stay. Its right at the center of town, which is 7 mins walk for the slow boat landing, close to the Gibbon office, temple, shop and restaurant. The owners are helpful, friendly and nice if you want to know about traveling, culture, language, food est. Just asked! :)

Best choice in Huay Xai.

Great little place, conveniently located just steps away from all restaurants & small stores, as well as not far away from the pier. Girls running the hostel were absolutely brilliant, helped to answer all our questions & booked us a slow boat for a great price! We extended our stay one night as I came to the town with a swollen ankle and the ladies were happy to offer me ice from their freezer for my poor ankle, which was really nice! Room is AC and fan equipped, with 4 bunk beds that are clean and comfy. the whole hostel was very clean & well organized, with cute rules written on the walls. The room was a bit dark, but there is a nice lounge area with huge windows with lots of light. Would recommend to anyone and would definitely stay again.

Not the best at this price

Reviewed By Piergiorgio P

I stayed in this hotel because is strategically located at the center of Huay Xai, few steps from the pier to Thailand. The room is not bad, but certainly not the best you can get at this price (80.000 kyat for night, no breakfast). It has free wifi and attached bathroom has warm water. The room is not made up every day. The owner is kind and offers slow and fast boat to Pakbeng and to Luang Prabang at a price slightly above the average price offered by other agencies in the town.

Basic and safe with helpful staff - stunning views of the river

Reviewed By CarolnIan

We didn't know what to expect as we walked along the road to the hotel (also known as the Houayxai Riverside Hotel) as it was our first time in Laos and it seemed very different to Thailand (from where we had just arrived). But we received a pleasant greeting on arrival and our bags were carried to our riverside facing room down a flight of stairs. Room fairly basic but adequate and it felt safe. Please note that there was, however, no safe in the room - we didn't ask if there was anything available in reception. Clearly a family run hotel, which was quiet during our stay. Breakfast was included consisting of eggs, bread etc. with coffee and tea, taken in the open air, covering dining area overlooking the river. The town itself is a little dusty and around a 10 minute walk away from this hotel with various hostels, cafes and restaurants. Tried to find the Gibbon experience, but discovered it had to be an overnight stay which was disappointing as we had looked forward to it and didn't have the spare time in our itinerary. This wasn't clear from our research before we went, had it been we would have stayed longer to be able to partake in this. Major attraction of the hotel is the view of the river from the balcony outside the room, across to Thailand and overlooking the longboat harbour below. Fascinating to see the comings and goings of the longboat cruises/ferries and the local fishermen out until dusk. The sunsets are magnificent. Very handy for catching our onward riverboat for the next two days travelling to Pak Beng and Luang Prabang along the Mekong.

Hom Pho Guesthouse

Just as a warning!

Reviewed By romyvierenhalm

We booked the Hom Pho Guesthouse via Booking.com, we had to stay one night in Ban Houayxay because the next morning we would go on a 3 day hike with the Gibbon Experience. The guesthouse was right across the street from the office so great location and it looked as the most clean guesthouse in the area from the looks of the photos. However when we got there the host told us he overbooked the hotel and brought us to an adjacent hotel named Thaveesinh. The gentleman at the reception was highly unfriendly and tried to get us to sign some papers right away. We declined and asked to see the rooms first. Those were probably the filthiest we had ever seen, dust was everywhere and the overall look was just disgusting. When we got back downstairs at the reception we politely told them we would not take this room and said it’s completely different from the hotel we booked. They said it’s same same. So after asking them to come up with a solution, which they didn’t, we looked for another hotel ourselves. We showed him the hotel we would prefer to stay at, he got us a tuktuk and followed us to the hotel. We thought that was nice of him since he messed things up. The new hotel Oudomsin was alright for the night and the lady at the reception was friendly and gave us a good price. However the other host from Hom Pho Guesthouse asked us to pay the original price which was higher than the new hotel asked us. We explained him that, that would be wrong, so he asked us if we would like to cancel the reservation with him. Obviously we did since he overbooked our room... he didn’t quite get how things work. Nevertheless we’ve never seen the rooms from Hom Pho Guesthouse, so from all we know they could definitely be clean and nice. But just as a warning, if they’ve overbooked your room, don’t let him just send you to some hotel. Be sure to check the rooms first and don’t pay the original price, just ask your new hotel their price and pay them.

Ok for one night stay

Reviewed By ChloeAndLewis

Stayed here one night before getting the two day slow boat which the staff at the hotel easily booked for us. Price included pick up from hotel in TukTuk and taken to the pier. The hotel was quite eerie, the room had a window which opened into the hallway which was weird, kind of felt like something from American horror story haha. The bed was clean enough, the bathroom was quite rough but done the job.

For USD20/night it comes with aircon, a hard bed, functional toilet and bath. Didn't use the TV at all. You could do worse with some of the other places in town. It's centrally located just across from The Gibbon Experience, has restaurants, bars and a laundry all within a stone's throw. They did let me check in before 7am in the morning after I arrived on the night bus from LP.

"Lost in space" and no regular services and operations.

Reviewed By Knausir

We arrived in late afternoon. Entrance gate was closed but could be opened by ourselves. Reception desk was a small table and we were the only guests in the hotel. Rooms equipped with opulent "ancient" furniture in indish style and the smell inside was not nice. No service for dinner, so we had to leave the hotel and drove back to Chiang Khong (about 3km) for finding a restaurant. Breakfast next morning was at minimum level (toast, marmelade, boiled egg, cold cut, cheese and coffee). Another night in this "hotel" we wouldn´t have accepted. After breakfast we left it and after cross boardering to Laos we started our 2 days cruise trip on the Mekong to Luang Prabang.

Quite a nice hotel but a bit out of town

Reviewed By Prasas P

I visited this town more than 15 years ago and found It a sleepy little town. With a friendship bridge between Thailand and Laos, the town has changed so drastically that I barely recognized it. There were quite a number of big hotels and restaurants. Unfortunately my hotel was a bit out of town. To my surprise, my room was spacious and clean. The air-con was very strong and I had to adjust the temperature up to 25 C. Slippers were provided both for the room and the bathroom. To my delight, the bed was hard, but the pillow was a bit too high. In the evening, from time to time, I could hear the noise from a car driving by. But by 09.00 p.m. it was very quiet. The bathroom was spacious and clean. The water pressure was good and warm enough. The soap was pitiful. The closet was found wanting. When I pushed the sliding door, it fell and nearly hit me. We had a party in the evening and the food was very good. However, the breakfast could have been better. The worse thing was the bottled water in my bedroom. Two 330-ml bottles were provided, instead of 500-ml ones. The rate of 1,400 Thai Baht per night was ok for a hotel in PDR Laos where there are not enough hotels to accommodate growing number of tourists.

Clean sheets, door locks

Reviewed By BiviBag_ADV

It was 130,000 kip for the night. The girl at check-in was terse, the room was clean (as in not noticeably dirty), sheets were clean. There was Aircon but no controls, TV but no controls, a toilet roll and a reminder not to pinch the towels. It was ok for the night, which is all you would want to stay. Better places up the road.
