Not a zen stay at all!

Reviewed By natalieb543

I was awoken everyday at 7 every morning for yoga conducted right infront of my room. I am a yogi hence I chose to stay here but did not realise the my room/ studio would open onto yoga area literally. This meant having to move around yogis to get back to my room after breakfast. Yoga is 2-3 times a day. Other things I noticed: -There was a hole in door with only duck tape sealing it. -Decided to stay because of kitchen available but cooker not working it appeared. Receptionist informed me I needed to use a lighter to ignite it which not ideal. -Had to make breakfast myself while reception staff just sit about talking to long stay guests. On first day when I sat infront of reception rather than in hut, the receptionist gave me breakfast with 1 slice of toast only so hardly satisfying. -Not great atmosphere. Lot of clicky long stay guests / hippies that don't even smile. Other than that room was clean at least!

A special place

Reviewed By coleyjo9

I stayed at 13 different places while traveling through Ecuador and Costa Rica and Don Jon's was undoubtedly my favorite place. The open-air common area with good furniture and hammocks everywhere is a great place to hang out and relax. Jon and the rest of his staff are very helpful and accommodating; they set up surf lessons and ATV rentals for us. We stayed in a spacious, comfortable private room in the tree-house area. Everyone staying here is so relaxed and happy, and it's almost impossible not to be at ease and in a good mood. This place is amazing!! Highly recommend.

Don't stay here

Reviewed By Jjelibean

I'm not sure where all the good reviews come from (which is why we chose this place) but it's awful. Disgustingly filthy, disgusting toilets/bathrooms with no water in the taps, bedrooms were filthy and beds were broken and the list goes on. The owner was quick to take our money but really slow to fix anything. Eventually we left to go elsewhere because it was that disgusting. Owner refused to give a refund for the balance of our stay that we didn't use. I've travelled all over and slept on tables and on the beach but this was the WORST place ever.

Stinky People

I think that slow monkey was really beautiful pre-Covid. The pictures online are more beautiful then the real thing. Not every room has a working air condition unit. No room had window ventilation. Our room was a 4 bed dorm, with no working air flow. Normally no problems. However, our bunk mate hadn’t showered in quite some time. He was incredibly smelly. The fan spread dispersed his funky stench throughout the room and into our bags. The bathroom are cleaned, however I’ve never smelled cleaning products. The pool is not working as well. Positive Side: There was wonderful family style bbq on Saturday, and a great way to meet people. If you are musician and want to play and sing, that happens in the den every night. 420 friendly.

Surfer Hostel

A friend told us it was clean and good breakfast which was true. The price was a bit high for a private room with bathroom and we were able to spend another $20USD and get a way nicer place. It was a great location and ideal for someone looking to crash but close to the beach. The water restrictions also made it tough as they shut off the water and thought it would be back on by 5:30AM as told but didn't come on until 2 hrs later. Breakfast was delicious but staff weren't the friendliest. I've stayed in lots of hostels throughout south America and this one had everything necessary just wasn't for us. Wifi was also spotty.

Cute place but avoid the tent

Reviewed By 482arnaudh

The place is well located and really cute. The bakery is right next to it, which offers an amazing breakfast and lunch The bambu tent is cute, the shower and toilets are private. Only issue is the water running all night from the shower, the bitting ants in the bed… and the cockroaches coming out of the wall which (tbh) made me unable to sleep all night. Turning on the night to drink water, we uncountered a dozen crawling on the bed and floor.
