10 Top-Rated Cottages in Portugal

April 28, 2023 Jacquiline Darosa

Portugal’s Mediterranean charm is most prominent on the golden beaches of the Algarve; in the wilderness of the Azores islands; among the vineyards of Douro Valley; and on the cobbled streets of Lisbon and Porto, where old-world culture meets cosmopolitan bars and restaurants.

Absolutely amazing stay

Reviewed By earthjujo96

Everything about this place is magical. The mountain views, the shale houses, the people, the staff (everyone was super nice!). The breakfast is really good, and taking it overlooking the mountain just made it that more special (and tasty!). The room (we stayed at Casa da Nogueira) was just perfect: the bed was really super cozy, the kitchenette very well equipped and the bathroom clean and well lit. The fireplace is the cherry on top, providing a really comfy setting for the apartment. Additionally, the design of the place and its contents is super tasteful and modern, but also in line with the surround environment of calm, quiet mountain beauty. On top of all of the amazing things within the apartment alone, being able to walk out of this little corner into the refreshing mountain air and the wondrous peaks and hills of Serra da Lousã is just a pleasure beyond belief. An experience to repeat for sure!

Casa da Portela de Sampriz

Sublime and memorable

Reviewed By 651prof

The Casa da Portela de Sampriz was more than we could hope for. Situated just outside of Penedes- Geres National Park, we were surround by amazing natural beauty. The Casa da Portela looked out upon incredible views. The manor is beautiful, authentic, decorated with pieces that have served generations. The rooms honor the past while creating a sense of serenity and calm with modern comforts. The hostess provided us with wonderful recommendations and great maps for hiking. Our walks were filled with great appreciation of the beauty of the area. As I am nervous on small roads at night, we would enjoy an evening snack (our own) with one of the wines they provided. There is a wonderful gathering room where one can play games (we did), chat, or watch TV. One evening we were able to arrange dinner on site. The kindness of the owner and the attention by the staff given to every detail make this memorable. Had we known how amazing this would be we would have booked 4 nights instead of three. We were so very sad to leave and cannot imagine anything living up to this experience.

This was the second time I stayed here and it’s still wonderful! Perfect location near the bridge and directly accessible to all old city locations by walking. Many Americans would say it’s a small space but I’d give traveled in Europe it is quite spacious. The front desk is extremely helpful. Be prepared for stairs - as Americans we tend to pack big. This really is the best place in Porto!

Magical place - healing home for the soul

I don‘t attempt to put in words the inner peace and gratitude this place created in me. It is a beautiful space! I left a little more whole than I arrived. Overlooking the green Lousã-Jungle, the wooden Terrasse was my resourcing and creative spot - perfect for yoga, a morning coffee, inspiration, or the copo do Vinho along with a lovingly made dinner ✨? I will definitely come back with my mum to enable her the magical experience as well! The place is only one side, the people are what gives Cerdiera Home for Creativity it‘s peaceful family character. Very passionate and kind souls?? I felt so warmly taken care of, whenever I needed something! I spent my day hiking the incredible green paradise (yes, paradise!) and shist villages (of which I think Cerdeira is for sure the most beautiful one) and unluckily got lost at dawn, Ricardo saved me that night picking me up and bringing me home?? Muito Obrigada Cerdeira Village! Love, Emily

With the city of Lagos close-by you may of course go clubbing there, or simply stay and use our kicker or pool table in one of our three shared living rooms.

Worth staying

Reviewed By 347isabelm

Pro's: Super nice and supportive hosts, great surf and yoga lessons, clean rooms and bathrooms, other guests were always super nice and communicative Con's: Equipment in the outdoor gym area is rusty and cannot be used properly, if you're not eating at the surfhouse you will get mocked by the employees, dinner in the camp is good, but sometimes there wasn't enough food, water and food extras cost an additional fee and are not included in the "complete eating package", lunch packages are not provided although you need energy especially if you're surfing the whole day All in all, I would recommend it to friends and family, but the camp is randown and needs a little more love and attention.

Terrible service

On the first day, as soon as we arrive we conplain about a lipstick that was under the bed (in covid-19 Times), on the next day the person in charge came into my door, without a mask, trying to tell us that is staff isn't responsable for that, almost saying that was our fault. The dishes are poorly whashed, the sponge on the kitchen was not new, the jacuzzi water can't be drained or restored, what make us think that is Always the same for all clients. They claim is "treated" what ever that means. We could see from our Room window the cleaning ladys, cleaning the last gest house Next door, in 10 minutes, without a mask and pooring the dirty water from the floor, right in front of the house. This is not covid right for sure. On the last day, after leaving the house at the check out time we try to contact arcoshouse phone number and nobody answer, to ask if we can spend the rest of the day in the pool. Try to find someone to ask, and was nobody in the facilitys. At 16pm a very rude Lady named Cláudia came to the pool without a mask, telling me that i'm no longer a gest so i'm no longer welcome and that i have to leave the facilitys. It was shamefull, and i have to reenforce that in total, at the time, only 6people are using the pool surrondings. The village is awesome and the facilitys are great, but the staff and the maneging is the worst experience of my life! And i never complained before in my life, so, that bad. I have pictures of all that. Not clean, not friendly, not covid ready, not there problem. I Will conplain to the sanitary authoritys and send those pictures. This property needs to be closed right away. It's dangerous to operate like this. Never again Never again.
