Disappointing Honeymoon August 2021

Reviewed By FarronRocks

We walked into the Honeymoon Cabin and were excited to see a spacious place, complete with privacy, a jacuzzi in the corner and a fireplace straight out of my childhood. Seeing a good stock of dry firewood, I immediately started cutting some kindling and engineering some spark (fortunately I came prepared) and within minutes, had the the fireplace rolling. However, I noticed a higher than average amount of smoke in the room, so I examined the chimney from outside and did not see the output of smoke that is considered normal, so after only 20 minutes, I had to extinguish the fire as the smoke level was getting worse. Mind you, I searched everywhere for the flue mechanism to no avail. I advised my new wife to go outside for 20-30 minutes while the smoked cleared. Eventually, the room became habitable. We moved on with our lives and took consolation in the fact the jacuzzi awaited us. I changed out of my smoky clothes while my queen made a cocktail only to see there was no hot water. I sat there staring into the abyss while lukewarm water filled the tub, praying for some divine intervention that never came. We called the front desk and were told maintenance had went home. Well, in conclusion, we made lemonade out of the night, playing the guitar, drinking champagne, laughing and hugging. Yet, the night at this property was so disappointing as the two key features did not deliver. If they fix these issues and ensure they are reliable, I might conceivable go back again, but the odds are slim. In conclusion, call in advance and confirm these items are in operational order. Otherwise, be prepared for disappointment and improvisation at an i opportune time. Farron and Linette

Grandpas Hotel

Grandpas' Hotel is located a few miles away from Irazu Volcano. A mountain hotel with wood cabins on the mountain top. Because it's so small we offer great one-on-one service.

A charming place to stay

Reviewed By mlmdaisy

Like others, we chose Grandpas Hotel to be close to Irazu Volcano. We were very comfortable in the cottage. Yes, it gets cool at night and the cute little space heater doesn't produce much heat but, really, it's not THAT cold. We had everything we needed and we had both dinner and breakfast at the onsite restaurant. The food was fine and everyone working there was very nice. The views are lovely, the location was good, and I would stay here again.

A few days remote, but with class

Very warm and friendly welcome. Great location with a special Flair. Rustic, 1930 built, but in a good shape and the original touch. The owner is a bio scientist, knowing a lot about the surrounding nature. In addition she is a passionate cook you will enjoy a great time. The food is excellent, innovative, delicious and nicely presented. The rooms are clean and as it used to be in the old times. Definitely to recommend.

Uncomfortable beds and rooms

Reviewed By Jillian A

We stayed last night. We booked the room for three nights and left after the first night. I have allergies to mold and couldn’t sleep- the sheets/pillows smelled moldy. The room had small transom windows with no screens that let the bugs in. There was no overhead fan or fan of any kind. The mattress was a single mattress on a platform and very uncomfortable. The towels were rough and gray. There wasn’t any decent shampoo. Photos posted are of our room and bath. No refrigerator in the room. There was only one other couple staying there that night. We got in late - at 6:30 pm and there didn’t seem to be anywhere nearby for dinner. The owner is extremely nice and tried to be accommodating. If you want a budget hotel with a beautiful view this may be for you. Breakfast was okay. I have multiple food intolerances- and admittedly did not let them know. Eggs with ham and toast were served and there was no other option for breakfast. She offered to make me beans and rice the next day. Although we decided to leave. The hotel photos exaggerate the size of the deck. It is a large deck but not as spacious as the photos appear. The room was very utilitarian. Very disappointed.

Bed and brilliant breakfast set in a lovely garden

Reviewed By mlyttelton

Maelle Burton has created a lovely set of bungalows around the garden They are comfortable and have terraces with jacuzzis. Our friend found this pretty much a high spot as she was able to watch birds from amidst the bubbles. Certainly the best Costa Rican breakfast, as you are given a generous array of fruit , eggs and breads to assemble on your terrace.

Wonderful stay

Reviewed By fredy_escaip

One of our favourite places so far in Costa Rica. The house was beautiful, with art relating to the area and with a beautiful garden with many fruits, herbs, and local plants. Wilman and Ana (I hope I spell their names correctly!) were amazing, super attentive and helpful/friendly. Ana cooked our dinner which was one of the best on our trip so far. The coffee here also tastes like coffee is supposed to! We had an amazing time and wish we’d stayed longer. Highly recommend!

I stayed in Montana Linda Guest House

Reviewed By jodygodfrey

I hate sharing a bathroom, and the hostel rooms were only big enough for the bed, zero floor space. So for $30 US per night I stayed down the street at the guest house while attending Montana Linda School for Spanish. The rooms are much larger, with private bathrooms, and shard kitchen and living room. 2 outside areas for seating. Very nice local woman does house keeping. 2 problems here, 1 cold water only in shower, it gets cool in Orosi, a warm shower would be great here. 2- the noise, dogs, and roosters all night long. This is a crazy noisy country. Nice garden.Beautiful mountain views.

One Hundred Years Mansion in a Garden

So much beauty and peace…. didn’t want to leave The changeing blues and golds that seep into the stately brick arcades are definitely not the bread and butter of any existence anymore. Visit, you’ll never regret it. The huge trees atest to the love of nature of the Lindo family, and it permeats the architecture, the gardens, the antiques in the mansions. Cheers to them for caring about the beauty sometimes available to us.

Fabulous views, lovely people

Reviewed By Eriwe

We stayed for one night at this hotel and would very much like to recommend it. On arrival we were immediately offered an upgrade to the deluxe rooms. I guess we must have initially looked unconvinced as, from the outside, the place looks a little worn round the edges. Our rooms however were lovely, modern, clean and with very good bathrooms and the view was the best we had in our whole stay in Costa Rica. Breakfast on the terrace was fabulous. The owners (a family business we guess) were super attentive.

Leatherback heaven

Reviewed By Astrid D

This place does not get 5 stars for the fancy accommodation. It is simple and basic, but also clean with a mosquito net and your own bathroom. The five stars are for the food work this reserve does in protecting the leatherback. They really make a difference in conservation and allow tourist to watch them while doing their job. It wat amazing to see a mighty turtle lay eggs on the beach. During the day you can take other excursions too, walking the forest or taking a boat tour. I definitely recommend this place if you love nature.
