Lewis and Clark Recreation Area

Lewis & Clark has 3 camping spots - Gavins, East Midway and Yankton. Gavins & East-Midway are very beautiful & provide a scenic view of the waters. We booked 3 log cabins (temp controlled room with bed & mattresses only) right in front of the water (80-100ft away) and the view early in the morning is very comforting. You have aged Birch and Poplars surrounding the waters and flocks of yellow flycatchers chirping Good morning to you. The park is really well-maintained - restrooms modern & clean, prompt garbage disposal, and a neat running/bike trail around. You can sight deer late in the evening. The Marina close by provides plenty of renting opportunities for Kayaks, speedboats and catamarans.

Meridian Highway Bridge

Repurposing the old bridge into a walking trail was a fantastic idea. It's fun to take both the upper and lower decks of the bridge for different visual vantage points. It's also fun to look at the locks people have placed on the bridge and to read the history of the bridge. There were people of all ages enjoying bridge, from families with infants to retired couples out for a stroll. This site is a must - see adventure if the weather is right for a walk..

Gavin's Point National Fish Hatchery

Reviewed By amyjosephine - Council Bluffs, Iowa

We visited the National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium and were very pleased with all of the information provided about the local aquatic life. The aquarium is small but has a great appearance and lots of information and things to see. You can buy fish food in the gift shop and take it to the hatchery to feed the fish. The hatchery has several buildings and ponds and does a great job of showing people how fish are bred there and explaining the importance of the hatchery.

Fantle Memorial Park

Reviewed By cm0tx - Dickinson, North Dakota

Love this park. There is a public city pool, lots of places to picnic and hang out along with playgrounds for the kids. Plenty of paved pathways for walking or cycling. But the best part for us was the 18 station disc golf course. It's big and it's free - just go and play. The park has plenty of trees and bushes for shade as well. Never had a problem with there being too many people or the disc golf being too full of players.

This is a great place for anyone wanting more info. on Lewis & Clark. There is a 20 (or so) minute film you can watch about their journey & lots of books for sale if you want to learn even more. There are several things youngsters would enjoy, like a keel boat out front, a huge replica of the dog they took with them, a tepee, a giant mosquito, etc... There are a couple of different trails you can take, one going to an overlook on the river. Definitely worth a visit!

The Icehouse

Reviewed By gena_veen - Colman, SD

This place started out as the Pure Ice Company in 1928 before becoming one of the best dive bars! You’re going to want to drink outside, not because the inside is, well, divey. But, you have a awesome view of the Missouri River is right across the street. Enjoy the camaraderie & the view while you sit on the loading dock under which the remnants of tens of thousands of broken bottles reside as relics of the bar’s history. Tradition dictates that you smash every empty on the concrete below the loading dock. This is a one of a kind place!

Yankton Area Arts

Reviewed By SoDakSarah - Yankton, South Dakota

This is a very pleasant afternoon outing while you're in Yankton. The gallery exhibits rotate regularly and feature regional artists. First Friday events are free, open to the public, and include a gallery talk by the featured artist. Free refreshments even. The building is the former G.A.R. Hall, which has been nicely restored. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas the gallery transforms into a gift boutique, with handmade gifts and artwork for sale. It's a small gallery but it's nicely done!
