Nice area with very scenic waterfalls, hills and the river. There are yours or you can always just rent a car and drive there since it's pretty straight forward.

Zoller's Outdoor Odysseys

Whitewater rafting fun for just about anyone. Three great trips to choose from on the White Salmon River. Upper Gorge, Middle Gorge or Middle/Lower Gorge Combo. Klickitat River open May - Mid June. 5 Day full vacation rafting on the Snake River in Hell's Canyon.

My husband and I took the harder trip with Zoller's (upper gorge) in a small four-person boat. I was quite anxious beforehand since neither of us has a lot of experience with white water rafting and the trip is on the adventurous side -- people do fall in occasionally -- but afterwards we were both thrilled with our experience.

Our guide Jake is a world-class kayaker (going over 100ft waterfalls by himself world class) and the assuredness and calmness with which he guided us, including over a waterfall, was remarkable.

We met some locals during our tour and they told us that Zoller's is far and away the best guide on the river. Based on our experience, I don't doubt it.

We make wines with an eye to European tradition with a particularly Washington State sense of terroir and style. Our wines are almost entirely varietal blends, believing that wine varietals are very much like people and dogs, with an egalitarian mixing up of characteristics to create interesting nuances and surprising complexity and beauty (think Halle Berry, mutts and Bordeaux). Our fruit comes from Washington state’s plethora of renowned AVA’s, including our very own Columbia Gorge AVA. We are currently closed for the winter season and will reopen February 2016. Our Hood River location is open Thursday through Monday.

We had a delightful time capping off a Hood River area wine tour at Aniche this spring. Very rustic and sweet place, with wonderful wine and even more wonderful views. Loved getting a small bite to taste with the wine flight! Between the dogs and chickens, hula hoops and picnic tables, this was a very cool place to relax and unwind.

Dog Mountain Trail

Reviewed By Jack B - San Diego, California

Relatively short hike, a little steep and rough in places with nice views from the top - you can see Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams. Recommend taking the 'easy' trail up - you get better views, and take the Augspurger Trail down - it is a little longer but much smoother and easier on your knees. You can enjoy looking around on Augspurger Trail as you don't have to focus so much on your footing.

Lots of wildflowers (April 8) along the trail.

While you are in the neighborhood, swing up to Dog Creek Falls - a mile or so north, and then consider hiking Wind Mountain - a mile or two south. The three make for a great day, 10 miles and 3820' of climbing.

There are restrooms at the start of Dog Mountain Trail.

Requires NW Forest Pass or $5 to park.

The winding road up to the crest is famous enough, but the views from above are spectacular! Even on a day with intense smoke from forest fires, the view was awesome. You can finish out this smaller portion of the Columbia River Hwy and reconnect with the interstate. Definitely worth the side trip!

We booked the 3 day basic white water kayaking course which stressed small groups (max 4:1 customers to guides) and a flexible approach based on the speed that the group acquires the skills. We already had flat water kayaking experience but planned our holiday around this course to give us some white water kayaking skills.

However after a knock on an activity before the course started, I had to take my partner (also on the course) to have an X-Ray (to get an all clear) and although we'd only be a little late into the first day (which was planned to cover skills we already had), we were excluded from the entire 3 days and, of course, no refund. While Wet Planet can presumably justify this extreme behaviour in their T&C's, I found the removal from a 3 day course for less than 90 minute's absence, a completely unnecessary over reaction and thus warn other customers to be wary of dealing with them in case the unexpected happens to them.

Antiques and Oddities

Reviewed By Hazel S - Corvallis, Oregon

Friends had talked about this antique store and recommended it highly so we planned a short road trip to see for ourselves. Although all of the other antique/collectible/thrift shops in the small town were closed mid-week, this large shop was open and busy. One would need at least an hour or more to just walk thru the shop. The array of items is vast--from European antiques (containers full) to coins, collectibles, furniture. Scattered among it are oddities. It's almost like a mixed up museum.

The young woman in charge was very helpful and knew pretty much what was on hand and where to find it. When I expressed interest in an item, she immediately directed me to other similar items. I found a treasure, reasonably priced, for a Father's Day gift. She also took the time to search thru a group of coins for a specific year.

The gift I purchased was wrapped carefully and packed well.

There are just so many various items, one must check it out for themselves. It may not be the most organized shop, but it's fun to explore.

Northwestern Lake Riding Stables

Northwestern Lake Riding Stables is located in the Columbia Gorge just outside of White Salmon, Washington, and across the river from Hood River, Oregon. We are about 1 ½ hours east of Portland, Oregon. Northwestern Lake Riding Stables is unique, because it sits in its own little valley surrounded by the majestic Cascade Mountains of Washington.
