The Harzbahn allows you to explore and appreciate this National Park which is very extensive and has numerous tracks and roads for bicycles and walkers. There are areas of clearing brought about by tree felling and a few small areas where the bark beetle has caused damage, but this does not destroy the scenic beauty and atmosphere, For the intrepid, a passsenger can travel for E1 supplement in an open railway truck from Weringerode to either the Brocken or Eisfelder Talmuhle. On the fringe of the Park, Quedlinburg, Alexisbad, Gerode and Weringerode are all worth a visit. Numerous pavement cafes to enjoy beer and coffee with gateau, Many fine timber buildings and churches. The Platz and Strasses are frequently composed of stone setts. A district in which to relax and reflect.

Truly a hidden gem! What a wonderful town. Why this town is not in all the tourist literature is a mystery. We are so happy to have found this hidden gem.
If you want to walk down street after street of lovely old German timber-framed homes and shops, look no furher. If you want to do that without tourists, this is the place!!
Look on-line at pictures. They will speak for themselves. Seriously, why this castle doesn't top destination lists, is a mystery.
The castle and town are nestled in the Harz Mountains a couple/few hours west of Berlin. We highly recommend a least a full day here.

The Harz Steam Railway is a real working railroad providing public transportation to the communities of the Harz Mountain Region. We traveled to the area and rode the train for the train enthusiast in our family, but everyone enjoyed the experience. The coaches were comfortable and the ride was smooth. The trains were on time and kept to the schedule. The only negatives were that the tickets were expensive and nobody spoke English. Overall, the railroad is a pretty big operation and it was obvious that this was more than a tourist train. Riding the Harz Railway was a fun and unique experience.

The Luftfahrtmuseum had a lot of aircraft including prop planes, jets, and helicopters, and it also had a lot of pieces of planes, including cockpits and engines. Everything is displayed in plain hangers and the overall feeling is that you are walking through a warehouse storing aviation equipment.

Wernigerode is a picturesque town north of the Hartz Mountains. The town is built around a fine colourful town square complete with a town hall straight out of Shrek the Movie with numerous cafes and restaurants to keep you fed and watered. Keep a look out for weddings held at the town hall on a Saturday , the celebrations start before the ceremony. The buildings are timberframed , colourful and interesting , look for the horses head sticking out of the Krellsche Forge from 1700 ish . There is a castle or Schloss , the starting station for the narrow gauge steam train to the Brocken mountain, 1200 metres high, and its tales of witches and East German Cold war listening posts. Although the town was bombed during WW2 many of the building survived and have been refurbished/built over the years providing a great environment to relax and enjoy something different. There are city walls to explore , a market to visit and a Lustgarden to enjoy some panoramic views of the town and Harz Mountains from.
The food is good , the portions plentiful and the beer cooling.
The Tourist Office has plenty to offer , but if you want a version in English you may have to ask. On arrival at the office you may also think it is closed - however it remains open into the early evening and the door is automatic and will open as you approach it.

Finding the Wildpark was easy with following the posted signs on the street. Parking right at the entrance or if ist busy a bit farther away but free of charge. Entrance fee is 1€ for adults and 0.50€ for kids.
What I really liked is that only German animals can be seen in this Wildpark. Either small or big, water or air animals, some you only have heard before. Its build up on a mountain and the sidewalk isnt always easy to walk on. Trolleys are useable but only the bigger ones made for it. On the way through the park you have signs with explanations with pictures.
There is a Restaurant and toilet available. All is very simple and not comparabel with a normal zoo.
Its quiet (if you havent got a crying or screaming child close to you) a beautiful walk and especially for Kids a good opportunity to learn about the German nature.

We were able to see the towns and villages we missed by visiting the Kleiner Harz. Here you will find excellent models of all the significant structures from the surrounding area. We thought the whole thing was fascinating and there is a nice cafe/restaurant when your done. It is a bit of a hike from the center of town, maybe 15 or 20 minutes, follow the signs. If you turn left too soon coming from the town center you end up in a shopping center. Go a bit further and you will see a sign pointing directly to the park.

The Kleinstes Haus is a ten minute stroll from the Town Hall through narrow streets of timber framed houses. There is a fee of 1 euro to enter the house and the guide will point out the small rooms , the photographs of the family of ten or more who lived in this tiny house - although I am sure that it is bigger than some of the loft conversions for sale in some cities. There is an upstairs with a collection of dolls - dolls from around the world. It is worth ten minutes of your time and if the 1 euro helps keep it available for us to see how some folks lived just sixty or seventy years ago worth the entry charge.

The Rathaus is on the main square of the old town and right beside the hotel we were staying. The building is very attractive both in the Sunshine of the day and the soft light at night. While we were staying there was a wedding and celebration there with much posing and photographs. They chose a lovely setting for the photo album.
