10 Things to Do in Washington That You Shouldn't Miss

February 12, 2018 Toi Mattera

Washington is a town in and the county seat of Rappahannock County, Virginia, United States. The site of this town was surveyed by George Washington himself in July 1749. It was the first of what would be many American places to be named after the future first president. Its population was just 135 people at the 2010 census, down from 183 in the 2000 census. It is nicknamed Little Washington to avoid confusion because of its proximity to Washington, D.C., which lies only 70 miles (110 km) to the north east.

Copper Fox Distillery

This is where your new favorite whisky comes from! At Copper Fox Distillery we dedicate ourselves to making great American spirits by emphasizing a combination of innovation and tradition. We start from scratch, floor malting our locally grown barley, flavoring the grain with apple and cherry wood smoke, then aging with a progressive series of hand toasted wood chips in used bourbon barrels. All of our fine spirits are available for tasting and purchase at the distillery. We look forward to seeing you.

My friend and I were just happy that we found this distillery as cell service was sketchy and I didn't have the address to put into my car's GPS. You have to ring to be admitted and we bellied right up to the tasting bar...MoreThank you for visiting and taking the time to review. Happy to know you enjoyed your experience and feel your pain about cell (lack of) service. We're working on it!

This is a newer winery located near many other wineries on the RT522/RT211 trail. No menu, but they have a selection of cheese, crackers, snacks, drinks, etc. Wonderful deck off the back to sit and enjoy the view. Beautiful mountain, pond and farm views. They are also a working farm and I believe they offer farm tours - not sure if those need to be arranged ahead of time as we did not go back to the farm.

This last time it was a gorgeous 4by6 rug designed by a local artist. As always we were tempted by the exquisite French table linens, the China, lotions and potions, candles and so much more. There are always new local artists in the downstair gallery, A favorite of ours, Jeanne Devas.was showing her delightful, quirky new sculptures. Ballard's is a must visit in this charming town. Lake Moomaw

There's something for everyone at Lake Moomaw, from hiking and swimming to fishing.

We visited Lake Moomaw through Bolar Mountain Recreation Area. The lake was fairly quiet when we visited during an early June weekend. I was surprised at how chilly the nights got but we were prepared. We loved it so much we're going back in a few weeks.

You can rent kayaks and canoes on the lake by the Marina at Bolar Mountain. The lake is home to great fishing, bird watching, sunsets, and being alone with nature. We loved swimming in the lake but don't forget your water shoes! There are some sharp rocks on the bottom.

We asked ranger at visitor center what's the best hike if we have only 4 hours to hang around Shenandoah. One of the spots he recommended is at mile 15.9. There is no sign for this trail so you'll just have to slow down and look for parking lot with 8 cars. The trail is called Mount Marshall Trailhead with only 1.6 mi round trip hike. It's very short easy hike with breathtaking view! Def a must stop. Walk until you come to a u shape turn and keep walking up for 100 yards you'll see a left turn. Keep going straight to big rock and then climb up to see the view. It's amazing!!! We saw deers on the way as well.

Gadino Cellars

Family owned and operated winery located outside of Washington, VA

Reviewed By jehenson81

My friend and I arrived at Gadino Cellars just after they opened and had the place all to ourselves up until we were getting ready to go. The two ladies working there were very nice and I enjoyed several of their wines. Their tasting and their wines were the cheapest of the day and in my opinion the best. I bought ones bottle of wine that was in the semi-sweet family (Luminoso), but also really liked their dry Petit Manseng and their Chardonnay. The setting was lovely and superior to the Little Washington Winery in my opinion.

Wine Loves Chocolate

Reviewed By activetrekker - Washington DC, District of Columbia

This chocolate store was designed to find chocolates that pair with wine and is conveniently owned by the same people who own Little Washington Winery. The store is a novelty idea as they offer wine pairing with chocolate. If this interests you, I’d say stop, otherwise the store is a little on the expensive side. We wanted to purchase chocolates, but it was $2.50/for a single small piece of chocolate. We asked where the chocolates came from to which the shopkeeper replied, she had no idea and said the owners don’t tell her where it comes from. That was slightly concerning… However, I'm all for supporting small business and would recommend a stop.
