10 Things to Do in Visby That You Shouldn't Miss

September 9, 2017 Kandra Bartel

Visby is one of Scandinavia's preeminent medieval cities. Every August, it hosts its medieval week, complete with authentic dress, feasts and jousting. But you don’t need to visit Visby in August to get a sense of its medieval history. Just follow the cobblestone streets that wind throughout the city, take a tour of its Old Town and visit the 13th-century church. You certainly can’t miss the 13th-century wall that stretches three kilometers around the city and was once used as the city’s defense from intruders.

Lovely town to walk about. We walked the entire wall, stopping to visit churches and Gardens. Great photo opportunities from that vantage point, especially of the Baltic and parts of the old city.

We came here after visiting a small fishing village. What a beautiful view of the coast line. I'm not into adventure sports but there were people rock climbing, hiking, having picnics. A good way to see Sweden without all of the bikes and people. And, there are restrooms but no toilet paper!

Gotlands Museum

Another great museum in Visby is the Gotland's museum which focuses on the history of the island and starts with Vikings through the medieval times and Christianity and the development of the island. The is also a treasure room with collections through time and and the parts of the medieval town. There is also a huge room for children which has a lot of activities. Presently there is an exhibition on domestic violence which is horrific but very good and well worth contemplating over and about. Finally they have a very good restaurant and coffee shop with excellent prices and selections. Overall a good museum which will keep you entertained for half a day.

St. Mary's Cathedral

Reviewed By 1Gerrit48 - Davis, California

The church is architecturally stunning. Unfortunately it is owned by the liberal Swedish national Lutheran church, so the Reformation message is long gone. If you like liberal pap theologically speaking, then this church is for you. If you want to hear good biblical exegesis, then you should go elsewhere.

St. Nicolai Ruin

In the middle of thriving Visby this breathtaking ruin. My adult daughter and I were very taken with the architecture and written explanation of the place. It was wonderful to be allowed to walk in and look around and photograph it. The young children in the place were fascinated by the place.

Lummelundagrottan

Reviewed By Geir H - Western Norway, Norway

Visited with youngsters just after opening. Information was ok, the film before entering the cave was interessting regarding the discovery of the cave and the three youngsters. Should have been some more practical information before entering the cave. Our guide was motivated, prepared and observant. She had good overview of the group all time. One mather - which ruined our "tour", was that a new group followed us thight in the cave, and their guides information/stories disturbed the sound of our guide, we heard some of her and a lot noise from the following group - a rather poor experience

It was not a short drive from Visby and worth the trip if you are into wild nature and trying to get away from nosiy city life. The watch tower was closed but you can go to its bottom and look around. It is a cornor of land sticking into the Baltic sea hence a perfect signt for a paranoma picture. We saw some people having a sun-bath on a beach chair, too windy for our taste (you can do a great Monroe there).
