Isola Madre

Part of the Borromean archipelago and home to an exotic garden of plants, birds and flowers, this magical island is considered a botanical garden on water.

Reviewed By Samiseal - Australia

When you park in Stresa you may be approached by boat captains touting for their boat companies, they are reasonable value and have fast clean boats going about hourly, which is enough. You can also get the Ferries, they are a little more expensive.
Isola Madre has a Villa which was a residence rather than a palace. It also has an interesting collection of toys, dolls and puppet theatres.
The garden is really very lovely and peaceful, with some large pheasants and peacocks.

I don't think I've ever used the word 'awesome' before, but this truly was. You get to ride in a one/two-person 'car', a metal basket really, travelling 1000m up a mountain with the stunning landscape of Lake Maggiore and the Alps beyond steadily opening out before you (well, if you're facing downhill!). You can choose a closed or open ('aperto') car. Unless it's raining or you have no head for heights - in which case you probably won't be up for this anyway, I'd recommend the thrill of the 'aperto'. There are places to sit and gaze at the top, a nice little bar and a restaurant, and great walks in beautiful beech woods.

The Villa Giulia is a very scenic and beautiful place to enjoy some time and see the spectacular vistas that Lake Maggiore has to offer. The town of Pallanza-Verbania is off the beaten path but well worth the time, and Villa Giulia is the crown jewel of the town. Frequented by tourists and locals alike for the amenities it has to offer from restaurants to wedding facilities. Located in a beautiful park like setting right on Lake Maggiore. While you are there make sure to have a drink on the patio and enjoy the beauty that summer time has to offer in this beautiful setting. In one of my photos they are in the process of doing marble restoration for Cathedral at Sienna.

My favorite part of this little chapel is the Gregorian Chant music softly played over speakers from above. Please please please, other tourists, walk slowly, don't talk at all, and keep it a peaceful experience for all. It's a very pretty little chapel to come pray in and listen to the music.

Just a few minutes walk from the ferry terminal is this wonderful village church with murals on the walls of the covered walkway. The bell tower is quaint and unassuming, the whole area is just so peaceful in comparison to the noisy traffic on the main road. The tiny streets leading to and from the church are nice to stroll around too. Walk back to the lake front and unwind with a gelato and watch the world go by.

Golf Verbania

The Golf Club which has been built within the new province of Verbania, a touristic province well known for its beautiful environment, has two courses; one regular 9 hole course with double man's and woman's tee shots par 68 and one executive 9 hole course par 27. These courses are situated on flat land by the charming Lake Mergozzo with a beautiful view of the Alps which creates its suggestive natural surroundings. Its closeness to both Switzerland and Milan along with its position, located within a vast golfing district, make this golf club an advisable destination for many golfers, who can combine practising their favourite sport with trips to the many pleasant touristic towns and villages nearby in the ossola Valley and Lake Maggiore. The game is made varied and interesting due to the ponds and the vast wood, full of alder trees, but at the same time is also relaxing and not too tiring due to the peaceful surroundings of the course. A young and informal club, it distinguishes itself for the hospitality and friendliness of the management, who always have a smile and are ready to give advice to golfers and friends who come to club.

Beautiful location, nice facilities but bring your female counter staff up to internationally accepting golfing standards. The staff are not there to flirt and impress their partners. They are there to provide a service to customers/players. Having held 5 memberships in various courses located internationally, discretion is required to avoid any misunderstandings but this is our first experience of aggression, discourtesy and low level interfacing. We emailed our issues to the website contact details addressed to the president more than 3 weeks ago. We still , as per common courtesy await a response or do the committee not consider guests treatment worthy of a response. Your move.
All the plusses were lost through bad manners of the only female counter staff

Botanic garden on Lake Maggiore. The 16 hectares park houses 20.000 plants of particular botanic value and more than 80.000 blooming bulbous specimens, while over 15.000 border plants cover the numerous flowerbeds.

This is a fantastic garden, beautifully presented and easily accessed from the lake steamer. The dahlias were stunning, a fantastic collection of varieties planted out along a winding pathway. There's an interesting collection of Amazonian water lilies in a large hothouse. The self guided tour takes you round the garden, there's a coffee stop with toilets overlooking more waterlilly pools. You need to allow around two to three hours to take in the whole area. There's a very good restaurant at the entrance/exit.

The famous Isola Bella attracts thousands, the Palazzo itself is interesting but it's the Gardens people come to see. Formal Gardens, very manicured and stylised, filled with statues. It's almost a case of trying to fit in as many statues as possible. Peacocks wandering around attract attention, lots try to imitate their call to encourage a display of their tail feathers.
