Urbino (Italian: [urˈbiːno]; listen (help·info)) is a walled city in the Marche region of Italy, south-west of Pesaro, a World Heritage Site notable for a remarkable historical legacy of independent Renaissance culture, especially under the patronage of Federico da Montefeltro, duke of Urbino from 1444 to 1482. The town, nestled on a high sloping hillside, retains much of its picturesque medieval aspect. It hosts the University of Urbino, founded in 1506, and is the seat of the Archbishop of Urbino. Its best-known architectural piece is the Palazzo Ducale, rebuilt by Luciano Laurana.

The frescoes by the Salimbeni brothers of the Crucifixion and the life of John the Baptist have great charm and character. Notwithstanding the solemnity of the religious episodes and themes portrayed, they convey a wonderful sense of early fifteenth century life through their detailed observations of ordinary people. Wherever you look, you will find interesting details - children fighting, dogs licking themselves, men sporting the most outrageously fashionable hats, locals quaffing wine whilst John the Baptist is preaching and baptising.The Salimbeni may have been paid to paint great religious scenes, but they could not resist also painting what they saw around them. There is something very accessible about these frescoes and for images which are six hundred years old they have a life and vitality which is still heartwarming today.

We toured this today and had a great tour guide which made the visit very informative. It took about an hour to really study all the wonderful art in the palace. It is definitely worth a visit. Many stairs to get there.

While this collection includes works by Raffaello, Peiro Della Francesca, Bellini, Orazio Gentilleschi, ceramics, tapestries, etc.. I found myself gripped by the incredible inlaid wood decorations throughout the Palace. The height of this work was to be seen in the Duke's Apartments with The Studio

go there for pic nic and enjoy the magnificent view on the town of urbino, a bit windy when I went there but it's beautiful

I'm sure the house would have been fantastic to see but unfortunately the times listed on their website didn't correspond to the times it was actually open. There was a sign outside saying it was open in the mornings until 1300, whereas the website implied it was open all day. A great shame as we had driven 3 hours to Urbino from Montalpulciano. We thought a visit to Raphael's birthplace as well as the National gallery in the Ducal Palace and also the Cathedral would make a great day. We saw the palace first and if we had known, would have gone to Raphael's house first (the Cathedral is currently closed after the earthquake in August 2016). Maybe next time?

Due to the earthquake, the Duomo was under repair and reinforcement. It was a disappointment not to see the interior murals, but the structure itself, perched on its hilltop, adjacent to the palace, was stunning. It was interesting watching the workers retrofit the 600 year old structure with heavy equipment and I beams.

The oratory of saint Joseph is one of the most beautiful and ancient monuments of Urbino, property of the st. Joseph Confraternity. It is composed by a church builted in the 17th century with a lot of frescoes, some paintings and a colossal statue of saint Joseph. There are also a sacristy with a beautiful wooden painted wardrobe, a little chapel called "dello sposalizio" and a unique room with a crib in full size made by the artist Federico Brandani in the 1550, the oldest crib in natural size in the world. In some showcases are exposed several silver objects from 18th Century, donated by cardinal Albani, and there is also a section of Confraternity History with ancient uniforms and objects.

The fortess is not much special, it was not even open when we visited it, but the view over urbino is certainly worth the climb.

We stayed for one week in the apartments of Terracruda. When arriving they welcomed us like old friends, and of course with a good glass of wine. The apartments are all decorated in vintage style. There is a nice pool and the view is excellent overlooking the beautiful landscape of Marche. The small town of Fratterosa offers small bakery and have an excellent pizza restaurant! Terracruda provide wine tasting and they offer good wines and are keen to share their passion. To make you feel welcome they have small things like fresh made cookies in your apartment, fresh vegetables you can use etc. the only improvement point is that apartments on first floor are bit noisy.

When you pass it, it is an ok quiet park with a ugly statue, but still a nice place. However it is not worth the crazy climb from downtown.
