Uglich Kremlin

Reviewed By bulldogspikesmom - Minneapolis, United States

If you take a riverboat trip through Russia, as we did, you will stop here in Uglich. I highly recommend the visit. The Cathedral of St. Dmitri on the Blood commemorates the murder of Ivan the Terrible's 9 year old son in 1591 with amazing frescoes. The official version was that Prince Dmitry was staying at the log house just next door to the church ( which, of course, wasn't there at the time) when he "accidentally stabbed himself while having an epileptic seizure" outdoors, a few steps from his house. Riiiiight! Conveniently, Dmitiry's death cleared the way for Boris Godunov to usurp the throne. The church was built on the spot where Dmitry died. In addition to the Cathedral are several other interesting old buildings in what was the original Kremlin ( or fortress) of Uglich. As you walk back down toward the boat landing, you will go through an excellent market with all kinds of really nice things to buy - fur hats and scarves, linens, sweaters, t-shirts and all kinds of stuff. Since I like to do my Christmas shopping while traveling, I was able to find wonderful things at the Uglich market.

Church of Tsarevich Demetrius on the Blood

Reviewed By nyackgirl47 - New York City, United States

We were on a Russian river cruise, and our last stop before reaching Moscow was Uglich. It is a lovely city, and I felt like we were seeing and experiencing the "real" Russia here (both St. Petersburg and Moscow are quite glamorous and cosmopolitan - really like most other big cities, but with glorious architecture). The church was lovely, with beautiful frescoes and a steel tile floor. Definitely one of the highlights of Uglich!

The church has some great frescoes inside as well as Russian icons, try not to miss it. We stopped here as part of a cruise and got to listen to a choral group perform, they did a great job! The town is known for it's watches, if you have chance stop by the factory in town, a short walk from the church, they have some very nice watches at reasonable prices.
