Rugged Beauty Boat Tours

Reviewed By magoo2007 - Vernon, Canada

Upon recommendation of many before us over last 10 years, we had a fabulous tour of this wee bit of coastline in the Trinity Area of Newfoundland. Bruce the owner is passionate and entertaining with his stories and pictures and history of the re-settlement of many coastal fishing towns, the growth and fall and rebirth of the cod industry. A maximum of 12 people get to spend 3 hours touring many inlets where previous settlements were housed. Some wildlife will happen your way, depending on the month. Eagles for certain. We are also treated to tea, biscuits and homemade partridge berry jam in his own private cabin with more storytelling. At times, Bruce will have a guest along from the area with their own tales of yore. Ours was the daughter of the postmistress of the day before the re-settlement of many of these villages.
The history, the geography, the resilience of Newfoundland's fishers and their families is the heart of this boat tour. Don't miss it.

Skerwink Trail

Skerwink Trail is the hiking Jewel of the region. It is internationally recognized and was ranked the top 35 trails in North America and Europe by Travel & Leisure Magazine (2003). This 5.3 km hike will provide the opportunity to view and photograph the amazing coastal scenery, sea birds, whales, eagles, sea stacks as well as icebergs (in season).

Loved this trail! It's a 5.3 km loop return and it was very well marked; there was never any doubt which way you should go. We oped for the coastal route, but there was also an inland option. There were so many beautiful vistas.
Note: there is an outhouse at the start of the trail...didn't see any others en route!

Sea of Whales Adventures

Reviewed By NEDeline - Toronto, Canada

We love zodiacs as used to own own one back in the day. Shawna sent excellent instructions and 2 90hp Yamahas easily skimmed us and 10 others through the waters of Bonavista Bay south. Captain Chris was fabulous--knowledgeable, interesting and funny. He was a maestro at keeping the boat close--but not too close--to the whales. A definite highlight of our Newfoundland adventure. We loved It.

An excellent place to stop after a long day of driving for a pint. Staff was helpful selecting something we would enjoy. Was very busy in the middle of the afternoon. Def heading back when in the area again.

Fox Island Trail

Reviewed By JSD57 - Princeton, New Jersey

The coves and cliffs around Trinity are stunning, and each trail is very different. The Fox Island Trail isn't as famous or spectacular as the Skerwink Trail, but once you've done that, this is a terrific second-day hike. The trail head is a bit difficult to find in the tiny town of Champaney West, but once you've arrived, the trail itself is well marked. It's part of the Discovery Trail system on the Bonavista peninsula. The hike is moderate, through short wooden sections out onto the bluffs overlooking the water, and finally through a small town with an old wharf. 5.3K of stunning views and fascinating communities.

There was a lot of pretty things in The shop. I loved the jewelry. It was quite busy as there was a tour bus there when we stopped. It was too expensive though....more lookers than buyers.

Lockston Path Provincial Park

Reviewed By Terry W - Madison, Wisconsin

This reaches the good standard of Newfoundland and Labrador's Provincial Parks. With an entry card, which covers all their parks, it is relatively inexpensive. Reasonable campsites, a bitter smaller than some of the other parks, but still adequate. On a large lake, called ponds hereabouts. The kicker is the 6 Km drive on highway 238, which is a wash boarded, gravel road, to get here from the main southern Bonavista highway, 230. The road is easily survived, and the park is only about 15 Km from Beautifully historic Trinity.

We spent 3 hours with Skipper Alex and she was awesome! Her enthusiasm at watching the dolphins frolic made our excursion that much more memorable! She was determined to find whales for our group and was constantly on the lookout. We were not disappointed! Definitely helped having the dive suits on to keep us all toasty warm.
