Timaru (English: /ˈtɪməˌruː/; Māori: Te Tihi-o-Maru) is a port city in the southern Canterbury region of New Zealand, located 157 kilometres southwest of Christchurch and about 196 kilometres northeast of Dunedin on the eastern Pacific coast of the South Island. The Timaru urban area is home to 29,000 people, and is the largest urban area in South Canterbury, and the second largest in the Canterbury Region overall, after Christchurch. The city is the seat of the Timaru District, which includes the surrounding rural area and the towns of Geraldine, Pleasant Point and Temuka, which combined has a total population of 47,100.

The old adage, you get what you pay for is true here. Tested the free camping, there is a reason it’s free! Great that the community have this facility available to tourists! No shower though and not too tidy. We also had someone try and break in at 05:30!!!

This museum is a must to go to - it was well set out, had fabulous displays, including a plane hanging from the roof. Congratulations for a great effort. Would certainly recommend.

Famlan is an animal farm park that's an Ideal outing for Families, Schools, Preschools, groups and animal lovers of all ages. All of our animals are very friendly most will let you get in with them some will be all over you (especially if you have FOOD)

Aigantighe Art Gallery

Aigantighe Art Gallery is the home of art in South Canterbury. Established in 1956, its name is Scottish Gaelic for 'at home' and is pronounced 'egg and tie'. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-4pm, weekends 12-4pm. The sculpture garden is always open. Entry is free.

A small art gallery with good quality exhibits in a older restored building type location .... nice grounds with sculpture (this area is always open for browsing or for sitting and relaxing.Quiet peaceful) .. can be viewed wet or fine.Nice helpful staff to assist of required.

Just a quiet place to reflect and take in the beauty of nature. The grounds are very well kept and nicely manicured. With either small children or as I was just reflecting quietly you will totally enjoy your time.

Timaru Botanic Gardens

This 153 years old botanic garden is a good place for the whole family. Related to the town size of Timaru, it is a nice pretty garden, for family gathering, strolling, exercising, you named it. Flowers beds, mature big trees, water ponds with ducks, a bit rolling ground, and one aviary corner. Robert Burns statue is welcoming visitors, Timaru is one of four places in NZ where you can find Robert Burns statues.

Awesome complex. Lots of parking, cafe on site as well as gym and beauty therapy. Inside has a spa for an extra charge, sauna, lazy river, lap pool, diving boards, hydro slide, playground and various pools. Love it!

Handy walking and cycling trial and track by the ocean and Saltwater Creek. Can be done by anyone including family with young children and dogs. Cycling track is very popular. Track can be extended up to Jack point lighthouse and even further. Parking is not far away. Good in any weather. Recommended for bird watchers, dog walking or physical activity by any nature lovers. A lot of native birds to watch.
