Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge

This refuge hosts thousands of overwintering waterfowl - ducks, geese and shorebirds. There's an autotour loop that passes ponds and marsh habitat for easy viewing from the comfort of your vehicle. If you plan to get out of your car, bring plenty of insect spray, as the mosquitoes can be pretty brutal at any time of the year.

For a fantastic birding experience, participate in the Freeport Christmas Bird Count, held on a Sunday each December. Check out Houston Audubon's website for the exact date.

Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary

Reviewed By P1313 - Peoples' Republic of Boulder

This is a small, one square block, bird sanctuary that somehow has been set aside, and apparently cared for mostly by volunteers, in Quintana, TX - just south across the channel from the small town of Surfside, TX. You have to do a drive-around and approach from the West to get there, however.
There is a viewing tower from which you can get an overview of the entire park. Due to several mowed paths looping through the park you can get close-up views of a variety of small birds. Binoculars are helpful.

People sometimes pass through here and don't recognize the historic value of the area. Stephen F. Austin landed his "Old 300" here, Santa Anna signed his surrender here, the Texas Navy had a famous battle with Mexican ships in the mouth of the river here. There are too many things to list, that the general public fails to recognize.

Fling Charters

Reviewed By Love2Dive2011 - Kellyville, Oklahoma

This was our first trip with Fling Charters and we couldn't have been happier. This was also our first trip on dive boat like the Fling. The crew was fantastic. They were friendly and very helpful. The was plenty of food and companionship among the divers. We were blessed with wonderful weather. The diving was awesome! We saw lots of different sea creatures. We didn't get to dive the East Bank due to it being closed because of something going on there. We dove the West Bank and Stetson. Stetson was the sight of our night dive. The dive masters put our safety first. They provided excellent briefings before each dive and then "opened the pool". Diving here is much different than diving in Cozumel and places like that. We will definitely do the Texas Flower Gardens again.

The boat was kept clean. The sleeping quarters were bunks and they aren't assigned. It is first come, first serve. Study the floor plan of the boat so you know where you want to sleep. Because the sleeping quarters are bunks, you will want to pack light. Pack what you think you will need for a 3 day trip and then take half of what you think you need. The food is served buffet style in galley. It was really good. There was plenty to eat. There was always food before and between dives. You will not go hungry. If you are prone to motion sickness, you will want to bring something for that.

I highly encourage anyone who hasn't done this trip to have a go at it. You won't regret it!

Cowboy Charters

Cowboy Charters, is not your typical Freeport or Galveston fishing charter, it's a Gulf of Mexico deep sea fishing adventure! We are a full time first class deep sea fishing charter company that runs out of Galveston and Freeport. We run hard and fish further than the average Gulf Coast fishing charter companies out there.

I fished with Mike "Cowboy" and had a great trip. Safe, experienced, professional with good, working tackle on a well-maintained boat who seems able to make fish bite just because he is there. We definitely had the best fishing of anyone I saw that day. These guys are fish whisperers. They know everything that is going on in the world of fishing and in the world if fish.

My family and I had a wonderful experience. Everything was as described on the website. The boat was clean and in excellent condition. We all caught a variety of fish and had them cleaned, filleted and bagged for us quickly. Honestly, we felt like we were going out with friends and not some guided touristy, over-regulated trip. Both Captain Rodney and Patrick let us have-at-it and they made sure we got the maximum amount of fishing in possible. They handled all of our novice fishing mishaps like pros and taught us a lot. I can’t wait to do this again!

The weather was rough, but Captains Mikey and Josh were up to the challenge and we went anyway. We caught a lot of fish, the crew were outstanding, they are like a well oiled machine. We went out about 130 or so miles with stops along the way for snapper, kingfish and grouper, we fished overnight at one of the deep water rigs for tuna. Then we fished our way back in. We also caught a few Sharks, a Pompano, a Mahi, a Bonita and lots of bait. It was a great trip, definitely recommend these folks, they want you to have a good time and catch plenty of fish!
