Stockton Lake

The clear waters of Stockton Lake beckon visitors to water ski, scuba dive, swim, or fish. And Stockton State Park is the perfect place to do it. It’s a perfect place for sailing – with perpetual southwest breeze and a nationally recognized sailing school housed at the marina. Two boat launches make it easy to get in the water, as does a swimming beach. Want to stay on land? The park is great for photographing wildlife, picnicking with the family, or just reveling in the beauty of southern Missouri. The park also offers a range of lodging from campsites to cabins.

If the weather is nice and you want an outdoorsy get-away, this is a good spot. The camping is basic with electric in the off season. The prices are less, and it is on the honor system with an envelope/pay station at the entrance. Understandably, the crowds are less as well. There are no showers or flushing toilets, as the water is turned off until April 1. The snap down water faucet at campground 1 was turned off, but you can get water at campground 2. There are vault type toilets at both campground loops, each equipped with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. There are nice walking trails along the lake. Boating is on your own, as the Marina is closed until April 1. There was a Bass Tournament this weekend. It was very windy, and we wondered how they were able to enjoy themselves crashing through the waves and spray! We went to the campground for some fresh air and relaxing.

Be advised to bring all you own supplies as there are no concessionaires open on-site. Closest places to pick up provisions are the Son Sac Depot at hwy 215 and Y, and the Stone Creek lodge, just west of the highway 215 bridge (as you drive west from State Park). Both businesses offer Ice, Soft drinks, bottled water, beer, and Hunt Brother's Pizza. The Son Sac Depot is a convenience store which also sells gasoline, miscellaneous supplies, and bait. Call ahead to order pizza and check to see if they are open before you head out.

Pomme de Terre State Park

With locations on both the Hermitage and Pittsburg sides of Pomme de Terre Lake, Pomme de Terre State Park offers a little bit of everything. A marina and boat ramps make it easy to get in the water and fish for bass, walleye, catfish, crappie, or muskie. Two public swimming beaches make for great places to cool off or laze the day away. Two hiking trails satisfy an appetite for adventure. And more than 240 campsites, two yurts and a lake house make the park ideal for multi-day getaways.

Beautiful lakeside RV park on Pittsburg side of reservoir. Wooded, lots of shade, nice rolling hills, most spots well-spaced and level. Camped in RV for three nights in space P226 right on lake and will definitely go back. Not very crowded on weekend in April. Excellent, attentive camp host.

Harry S Truman Birthplace State Historic Site

See where “The Buck” started at Harry S Truman Birthplace State Historic Site. Visitors can view the small frame house where the future President was born, and see furnishings that reflect what a house in western Missouri would have looked like during the time Truman lived in the house.

Reviewed By MTravi - Nashville, Tennessee

There are two houses here. One is the visitor center which has the name Birthplace of Harry S Truman on it and the actual birthplace right across the street. Silly me started taking pictures of the visitor center before I saw signs pointing to the actual house. I did not know it was open for tours so started taking pictures of the outside when the tour guide came up and asked if I wanted a tour. Of course I did and we went inside. Be sure to sign the guest book just like Truman did during the dedication ceremony.
There are several historical markers on the property. Afterward I went inside the visitor center and was shown the picture of Truman signing the guest book. Bathrooms are in the visitor center where you usually start your visit for the house tour. A small gift shop is also available. Open Wednesday-Saturday 10am-4pm. Admission is free but donations are accepted. Allow about an hour to visit.

Opera House Theater

Historic 153 seat, single screen movie theater. Playing movies 7 nights a week and matinee on Sunday.

Reviewed By christina0001 - Kansas City, Missouri

The Opera House Theater is one of my favorite places. It's an old fashioned type movie theater in what was originally an opera house. The building has been carefully preserved - you'll enjoy the tin tiles on the ceiling and 2nd level seating. There is also a small museum. They show 1 movie only, the movie changes every week and is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The movies are generally family oriented, usually PG or PG-13. Ticket prices are a little less than one other theaters generally charge. If you are in the area during the weekend, this is a must see treat.

Bushwhacker Museum

County and regional history museum focusing on the Civil War, Native Americans, railroads, U.S. military, and former State Mental Hospital. Tours also include the first Vernon County Jail, which is on the National Register of historic places.

If you are interested in the civil war, ask Eldon Stewart to give you the tour. He's donated many items to this great museum and his personal information is wonderful. I'm so happy we had him give us the tour and share with us. They did a great job in collecting items and displaying historical information. We loved it all. We even took a tour of the old jail. Wish we would have got there earlier as we only had 1.5 hours to spend.

Thank you To everyone who made this museum possible.

My first time...so much fun! Great family entertainment, lots for kids to do. The midway had lots of great choices for everyone.

Bleacher seats were covered, so that helped with the sun and heat.

Food was reasonably priced. So was the merchandise.

Ticket pricing was super reasonable, too! Very pleased. Great experience.

When I first heard about this place I was skeptical that the hunt wouldn't be much of a challenge or much fun. I was wrong! The hunt is non-stop action and the experience of watching real working dogs hunt is great. You'll see more birds in a half day hunt than you would in an entire season (or several seasons) of hunting on your own. Since my full time job is (unfortunately) not hunting, this is a perfect experience!

Dunnegan Memorial Park

Reviewed By mahgnitton - Stockton, Missouri

A great approximately 40 acres of well kept park. There is a pond with ducks, geese, and swans. The white swans have had 7 small little ones born this spring. You can feed the birds bread and they will come close to you. There are several family sites to stop and play on safe playground equipment. There are areas to stop and use the tables for a picnic and let the children run and play. I think there are 11 or 12 areas that a family can use to put their lunch on and relax in the extremely well treed areas and well paved road to travel around the area at 15 mph or less---lot's of speed bumps to control your speed. A great area to relax in or take the family out to have fun. It think there are two pavillion ares--roofed to have a picnic and there is an area that does have restrooms.
