Have watched the Stawell Gift on TV for years and have finally been to the iconic site where they are held. The oval naturally is perfectly manicured and impresses immediately.
The old stands are classic and will not disappoint any visitor. The surprise was the small Gardens behind the stand that were delightful.

Best's Wines Great Western

Founded in 1866, Best’s is one of Australia’s oldest family owned and operated wineries. MISSION: At Best’s, we chase quality at every point and we’re meticulous in finding ways to improve at each stage of the winemaking process. All aspects of making the wine are handled on-site at Best’s Great Western, allowing the winemaker to have full control over quality. We strive for our wines to express everything possible from the vineyard, vintage and region. Our Winemaker Justin Purser in conjunciton with Viv Thomson believe that you must treat each vineyard and resultant wine as an individual and adapt your winemaking to their respective personalities. COMPANY OVERVIEW: Founded in 1866 in the Great Western wine region of Victoria, Best’s Great Western is one of Australia’s oldest continuously family owned and operated wineries. Best’s is known to have some of the oldest vines in Australia and produces extraordinary wines with great longevity. Today, Best's Great Western draws from three vineyards, Concongella, St Andrew's and the newest addition, Salvation Hills at Rhymney. Henry Best’s original Nursery Block, containing over forty different varieties, and his old Shiraz and Pinot vineyards are among Australia’s most valuable viticultural resources. These are three important factors in the style and quality of Best's Great Western wines. They are elegant, mid-weight wines of great intensity and balance. Like all classic long-lived wines, age often reveals their greatest finesse. At national and international wine shows, Best's consistently garners awards and accolades.

My partner and I wanted to visit wineries in the grampians region, but wanted to be able to have a few drinks without worrying about driving. I booked the Triple Treat Tour, and we couldn't have been happier. Justine collected us from our accommodation in Halls Gap and was so friendly and knowledgable about the area. Although it cost $110 per person, I can justify spending that much considering the tastings were significant and each winery was unique. The cheese platter at Grampians Estate was much appreciated. My only suggestion is that it would have been nice to get a small amount of food included at each winery to break up all the drinking. This is a new company, hence the lack of reviews, but I highly recommend it.

Stawell Gold Mine

Stawell Gold Mine is the largest gold mining operation in Victoria. The mine is renowned (ambiguously) for being the hottest mine in Australia. The Gold mining operations in Stawell have been in operation more recently since the first owners commenced in the eighties. The current owners are Crocodile Mining and have several other mines. The Gold mine has a large viewing area along Reefs Road that runs alongside the portal that enters the mine and continues for approx. 2-3 kilometres in many different directions under the city of Stawell. The observation area has a commentary device activated by visitors to the attraction and visitors can observe the large mining machinery working the mine and also listen to the mining history in Stawell (since 1870's). There are many facets to the visitor area including a heavy bar that repesents the wieght of a REAL gold ingot bar (similar to those poured at the mine in the foundry). The mine at times offers observation tours to SOME areas of the mine IF the request is reasonable and can be negotiated with the owners/administration of the mining operations.

You do not walk around a mined picking up nuggets. You dig out a lot of dirt and rock, which will usually contain a small amount of gold, which is extracted through various treatment processes. Mining is a hard and dirty job, though far less dangerous than it once was. You can get a glimpse of the mining process at the Stawell Mine, but the.operating company makes its money out of mining for gold, not hosting tourists. The Stawell mine is said to be the largest operating gold mine in the State \of Victoria, which was once one of the world's great gold provinces. Not now...
