10 Things to Do in Sperlonga That You Shouldn't Miss

October 27, 2017 Agatha Simes

Sperlonga is a coastal town in the province of Latina, Italy, about halfway between Rome and Naples. It is best known for the ancient Roman sea grotto discovered in the grounds of the Villa of Tiberius containing the important and spectacular Sperlonga sculptures, which are displayed in a museum on the site.

Villa of Tiberius

The Villa of Tiberius is a must see if you are in the Gaeta/Sperlonga area. The small white archaeological museum is very well done. It's light and bright with skylights that serve to highlight the scale of the dramatic, large sculpture found at this site.
It's a short walk down to the villa and grotto where Tiberius kept a fish farm. The view outward once inside the grotto with the sea, beach and Sperlonga framed in the distance is a great photo op!

Visited after a few days in Rome with my daughter. Lovely place, mostly Italians. Gorgeous sandy beach, gentle shelving water. Small public beach area, but enough space. Most hotels have their own beach area with beds and parasols. Few bars and restaurants on the beach side and an old town on the hill to explore. Suitable for families. Great place to unwind after sightseeing in Rome.

This beach is by far the prettiest we have seen anywhere near Rome, and far more beautiful than the commercial Beaches of Sperlonga. The facility is not huge (which is good) but the staff are super friendly, organized and helpful. Place offers showers, changing cabins, etc, loungers are modern and clean, umbrellas fine, but the star here is the Emerald water and nature surrounding the place. It's a charm, plus the bar and restaurant are superb.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale Grotta di Tiberio

Reviewed By Hera38 - New York City, New York

The museum was built to house the fabulous ancient sculptures found at this site. Over--life-size marble groups in a flamboyant Hellenistic baroque style illustrate episodes from the Odyssey.. One main group represents the blinding of Polyphemos. Another shows Skylla snatching six marble men from a marble ship. Entry includes admission to the archaeological site, a huge Roman villa directly on the sea, with its fishponds and the great cave where the sculpture was displayed. There are sea breezes and beautiful views towards the town, and, in this area of overcrowded Beaches and discos, the archaeological area usually is almost empty.

Lido Grotta dei Delfini

Just a few steps away from the old town and the marina, on Sperlonga's most beautiful beach, the Lido Grotta dei Delfini provides its guests comfortable, generously-distanced umbrellas and a wide range of additional services. Besides swimming and sunbathing, the Lido offers varied catering options, beach tennis facilities and part-time children's entertainment (between 4 and 6 pm during weekends and the whole month of August) in a relaxed, customer-friendly atmosphere.

There are few places that are as special as Sperlonga, with the Grotta Dei Delfini establishing why it is such an enchanting place. Newly renovated in the summer of 2013 (after apparently disastrous fire), this beach establishment is incredible!
My family has made a point to stay a week every summer in Sperlonga, and go to the beach of Grotta dei Delfini.
The Grotta dei Delfini, in addition to Sperlonga in general, is definitely a well kept secret among Italians. This is not a typical tourist destination, but overhearing conversations on the beach, you can tell that it attracts people "in the know".
Whether it be a famous soccer player looking for a low key yet sophisticated escape, or a couple traveling from the states, you can see that the Grotta dei Delfini is a go-to place.
Everything from management to the kitchen is put together quite nicely. I know its family run for a long time, so the experience is there, and the place is run very professionally.
The best times to go are clearly early July and late June, when it is quite enough to have the place practically to yourself. In August, as vacations are in full swing, it is hard to find a place on the beach, with many people reserving spots a year in advance.
Overall, this is one of the most coveted spots on the beach in Sperlonga, and with the new renovation, seems that its future looks quite bright.

Blue Flag in Sperlonga A "simple" BLUE flag, however, is indicative of a huge wealth. One of these wonders on the "LIDO TRE CONCHIGLIE" of Sperlonga, a splendid village that can give a UNICO panorama: the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Lazio Hills, fill in the eyes of the visitors.

We stayed 11 days in Sperlonga and most of the time we spent at the Stabilimento LIDO TRE CONCHIGLIE located directly at the beautiful long beach between Sperlonga and Terracina. Francesca and Alessandro delighted us with their warm hospitality. Most of all we enjoyed the local specialities Francesca surprised us with every time we dropped by. She is a great cook! Our favourite is the follwoing dish: "Spaghetti Scoglio"! Very fine and tasteful. But every dish was unique and excellent. We strongly recommend to visit this location if you are at Lido Sperlonga. We definitely will come back!
