Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway

We did this drive after our disappointment going to Deadwood. We picked the perfect time of year to drive in Spearfish Canyon. The leaves were turning all yellow and there was a lot to photograph, waterfalls and old buildings. We were there the first week in October and even had a dusting of snow along the drive.

D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery

This is much more like a park than the normal Fish Hatchery. The grounds are manicured, there are many things to do - feed the fish, feed the ducks, go through the museum but most interesting is the rail car to carry fish. The volunteer who gave us a tour was very knowledgeable and excited about sharing with us. Its right in town so its easy to include a visit with anything you might be doing downtown. Great for all ages.

Termesphere Gallery

Dick Termes is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work is recognized from New York to Tokyo. Termes spends several months painting spherical canvases know as Termespheres. These unique, mind-bending works of art are unlike anything you’ve ever seen. In the Black Hills, you have the opportunity to visit the largest collection of Termespheres in the world. The Termesphere Gallery can be found in one of four geodesic domes nestled in a valley just outside of Spearfish, South Dakota. Once inside, you can’t help but marvel as several dozen of his intricate worlds hang and rotate before your very eyes. “His art is magnificent and like nothing that I’ve ever seen before. We actually spent longer there than intended because it’s so interesting and beautiful.”

If you are interested in art, mathematics, or both, this is a must-see hidden treasure in NW South Dakota. Termes' canvas of choice is a sphere. He worked with mathematicians and computer scientists to develop a new math to help work out perspectives for drawing on a sphere. The art he created as a result is stunning and worth a peek. The museum is free, and the caretaker is full of interesting knowledge about the artist and his pieces. Definitely worth a stop.

Winter comes in a close second, but Spring and and Summer are equally beautiful. You may be treated to glimpses of deer, turkeys, mountain goats, marmots, and maybe even a Mountain Lion! I've enjoyed playing in spearfish. Nice area and the competition has gotten better. Reasonable cost to drop in and play Pickleball with down to earth players.

My only concern is that we've been placed on the skating rink floor and I've had to put my knee brace back on. As I listened to other players they're resorting to knew braces and medicating because they're joints are feeling sorer than normal.

We're playing on tile over concrete and this has to be the worst surface to participate in an athletic event which requires lateral and moving forward and backward and some pivoting to strike the ball to play. We probably can avoid the pillars by not playing competitively and losing the option to lob has taken a portion of the game away from us.
I hope the rec center will reconsider us playing on the basketball court and encouraging the people to continue to grow in their game and increase the new membership!! As it has grown a lot in the two years I've been traveling to play here.
